Decent story but plain in its execution and nothing/nobody really stands out as interesting.

Talk about an interesting little movie. Not a major production, but still a good one and it features a bunch of established character actors from the silent days like Conrad Nagel, Zasu Pitts, Slim Summerville and Bert Roach mixing it with new up'n'coming ones like the great Humphrey Bogart long before he got big, and Bette Davis in her movie debut! Sidney Fox also made her debut but would not become a major star, but certainly could have been. She ended up killing herself few years later at 34.

The script may just be a perfectly anodyne bit of moral melodrama (adapted from Booth Tarkington's 1913 play, "The Flirt"), but as early talkie stage adaptations go, this is pretty well above average. This is because it possesses two qualities many lack: a camera that can move and a cast that can act. The scramble for speaking actors was a big opening for up-and-coming talent, and there's plenty of that here. Most famously, Bette Davis makes her debut as the more modest and motherly sister.

In these times, the naïveté presupposed by most of the situations is rather sweet. Bette Davis, somewhat unexpectedly, plays the GOOD sister, and gets one great scene where she shows some real vulnerability. Bogart is the handsome, charming con man, Zasu Pitts steals every scene she's in as the cranky maid, and there's an almost-endearing little shit of a brother. Sidney Fox is the sister who leads on half the town. The ending is a bigger twist than any suspense flick I can think of.

Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart are great in their small roles. But it was the weird out-of-left-field happy ending that was the most memorable thing about this film.
