In this little Provencal village, a new baker, Aimable, settles down. His wife Aurelie is beautiful and much younger than he. She departs with a shepherd the night after Aimable produces his first breads. Aimable is so afflicted that he can not work anymore. Therefore, the villagers, who initially laughed at his cuckoldry, take the matter very seriously (they want the bread) and organize a plan to find Aurelie and to bring her back to the bakery. (imdb)

Orson Welles called this the greatest movie ever made. It didn't have quite that impact on me, but it's an amusing farce. There isn't a whole lot I can say about it, really... Raimu and the entire supporting cast are terrific, and the dialogue is witty. The mise-en-scène left no particular impression on me, but the film has an overall pleasantness that's easy to get into, and the theme of forgiveness is handled quite well. Not a knockout of a film, but one executed without any glaring flaws.

So much nonsense blabbering! Too much for my liking, but The Baker's Wife (1938) is still a movie you can't help falling in love with. Watching Raimu and how he handles being left by his wife is priceless, ranging from denial to drunk and suicidal! What a wonderful drunk Raimu could be! He's the entire story, though I wish the sexual charged wife had gotten more screen time for she was sure a horny one!

A quaint, simple story about a cuckolded breadmaker that really toys with your emotions. The film felt a little long -- not boring, though -- but taking out any bits of the townspeople would ruin the atmosphere of the gossipy place. Funny in parts (the priest is usually good for a laugh), and sad in others, this was a nice little treasure from the past that still manages to feel relevant today.

An under seen link in the chain of so many modern movies that I love. A depressing fucked up romance centered around a great lead performance. How everyone is out for the their best interests but will also work together for a cause bigger than themselves. How fucked up we can all get over a person we’ve put on pedestals. Pretty funny too

Marcel Pagnol fills the corners of this film with gentle eccentricity, and the slightly comic, endearing portrait of life in this small town is just exquisite. Raimu turns in a truly wonderful performance. In the long central part of this film where he gets very drunk on Pernod and lets his guard collapse, he veers between broad comedy and subtle pathos. I love this film. It's not quite up to the sheer majesty of the Marseille trilogy, but it's Pagnol at his very best.
