Possibly they were photographers after the adrenalin rush (bang bang) in the violence . Perhaps they really wanted the world to see the truth of Apartheid and the violence occurring within the communities (bang bang). Calling them the Bang Bang Paparazzi would not be fitting in the least. One always seems to lose themselves within the madness.

Really good perspective on a part of war rarely explored. Exploitive or empowering? You decide.

The violent street conflicts are well-staged but they're about the only part that works. Specifically, men running around clicking their cameras does not great cinema make. Narratively the film was put together pretty shoddily: nobody's motivations were explained in clear enough terms, and the focus shifted too much. The acting was not great either, although the atmosphere created by the locations was quite immersive. I'd rather watch Children of Men again and visit my local retro camera shop.

I liked the fact that it feels very much like a movie made by photographers, for photographers. Apart from that, the script's unfortunately kinda mediocre. Spectacular street battle scenes, though.

"Fails to convey the influential reach of the photographers' work and shows disinterest in engaging with the charges of exploitation and complicity leveled at them." - Nick Schager

Recreation of events and conditions faced by war photographers in the South African uprising. It is told mostly from the perspective of one photographer. Many tense scenes, a few very beautiful women, and a lot of violent chaotic rioting. Good music and production quality. Worth watching.

The Bang Bang Club essentially captures the uprising in Africa in the early 90's as well the hardships of being right in the action and not being able to help out. These photographers took award winning pictures, but what the Bang Bang Club shows is how much it bothered them. Brilliantly acted by Phillipe, Kitsch and Akerman, the Bang Bang Club is as much a character study as it is a war drama. This movie is brilliant in all ways, I recommend that everyone see it.
