"The Barretts of Wimpole Street" is a very average family drama until Charles Laughton bombards himself on screen as the tyrant ruler of daughters! This dwells a bit too much into boredom when he's not there... and then an cold silence would come and he'd be standing there raising the level on intenseness to Godly heights. Norma Shearer is a strong counter point to her merciless fathers domination and mental torment. And their scenes were always bubbling of emotion.

This would be an unremarkable film if Charles Laughton was not in it.

The last half hour almost makes up for the relentless mediocrity that precedes it. At least Charles Laughton had some REAL craft at his command.
