Fascinating horror film (shot in full 2:35 widescreen no less) is imaginatively crafted, and West's staging shows an instinctive grasp of the cinematic possibilities of the wider format, even if the performances (especially by the ladies of the manor) sometimes stray into overdone staginess. Almost turns into an Agatha Christie whodunit along the way, with a charming epilogue urging the audience not to reveal the identity of the master criminal! Great fun.

Very impressive for the time and the probable inspiration for Batman. The Bat is a stealthy burglar, but much of the movie is a haunted house setting. Great editing, camera angles and lighting, with creepy shadows and silhouettes. Good mystery too!
