On June 4-6, 1942, a large Japanese force attempted to capture Midway Island in the North Pacific, but was defeated by U.S. forces with a loss ratio of 4:1 in favor of the Americans. It's colour footage of WII bombing raids, so that alone makes it interesting, but the rest feels a bit corny and overdone.

A true masterpiece. Brilliantly edited, shot in the midst of the initial attack on the island, Ford's camera proves that even though we are removed from the images, it matters when the bombs going off are real. And the sequence where the flag is raised in mid-battle is stunning. Excellent all around.

This is exactly the kind of Documentary I dislike, that is to say propaganda film documentaries. The combat footage is good and lets you feel how crazy things got but everything else and I mean everything was just so bad that I wanted to turn it off but didn't.

Yes, it's propaganda, and it's as corny as can be, but (a) for one thing, kicking Japan's ass was a very fine idea at the time, and (b) there's just no substitute for knowing that all the combat stuff is real, and shot by USN cameramen who were risking their lives to get it. Besides, whatever you hear about Dubya or other shortcomings of the USA, there are still a few of us who are proud to be Americans. This is a HELL of a lot better than the Hollywood version made in the '70s

Kudos to Ford for the valuable footage and good editing. It's a propaganda film so there's an obvious bias against showing of American losses (gotta keep that morale up), and the narration and pompous music are pretty funny.

Well, this was better use of John Ford's time than having him film infected penises (see Sex Hygiene). A lot better! A aerial battle in color, no less!

Toxic. Laughable.

It was all right but it's increasingly unbearable when at least a third of the aerial sequence are from Battle of Britain. If you like warbirds, you clearly spot spitfires and not tomcats. Anyway, a good movie on a rainy day. A bit long though...
