A failure. Because it lacks the melancholic gesture and social fundament of Spring Breakers to create the disturbing and emotional disconnection to the world. Here, we are suppose to enjoy the nihilism because we tell ourselves that we know that it's nihilism. In Spring Breakers the enjoyment came first and we were surprised to find sadness within us, our taste and values. Basically, it feels like Korine gave up on the world. Before the Beach Bum, he just pretended he had done that.

It probably has less to say (ugh) than something like Gummo or Spring Breakers. There's less in your face poetic moments than like Mister Lonely but there's some top quality, very Korine esque moments in this (destroying his house, the whole wedding scene, the scene where moondog skateboards with the homeless people, Zac Efron!!!!, etc) Loved all the scenes set to the Cure. Also, The fireworks scenes at the wedding was definitely giving me nu-malick vibes for sure. Exceeded my expectations

"you know what I like the most about being rich?" the drifter as a grifter. more than anything, this reminded me of Homer's Enemy. Moondog is Homer, and everyone outside of his orbit is Frank Grimes. the mythos of the "free spirit" is pulled back, and though there is some level of admiration for the Good Time Ethos, this movie isn't subtle about what kind of person the title character is, and that he isn't punished for it might alienate a lot of people. it is also very, very funny.

Korine imbues The Beach Bum with a poetic sense of pathos that belies the fact that it is nonetheless as pure a stoner comedy as exists. His various ethos ("there is beauty in all shit," and "to accomplish greatness, live life like a criminal") are exemplified utterly by Moondog's uncompromising, yet typically harmless, hedonism. He seems like the flip-side of the Spring Breakers leads, having washed up on the wrong side of a lot of hard living, without it having dulled his spirit even slightly.

A man hedonisms through life, skirts around tragedy and responsibility, allowed to live life on his own unusual carefree terms. On the one hand it's too in love with its consequence-free protagonist who never has to learn or grow. On the other hand it leads to 90 minutes of nicely shot, colorful and amusing McConaughey scene-chewery that felt like wish fulfillment to this responsibility-avoiding slacker. It's all kinda slight and I'm not sure if I should be annoyed it didn't have more to say.

Beautiful, sugary concentrated chaos. Comedies don't usually get the benefit of the iconic, poetic imagery that permeates this film, nor do such images often appear so hilarious. In a film where every supporting character vibrantly competes to top one another, Martin Lawrence steals the show. In terms of legacy, once the recency bias wears away, I feel fairly confident this will remain the best stoner comedy ever.

Arguably both a continuation and a refutation of Spring Breakers. Korine focuses on an aging slacker rather than young college kids, but there is no obvious critical dimension, as if he is rebelling against the interpretations of Spring Breakers that positioned it as social critique. This appears to valorise the life of its slacker character, played well by McConaughey. The possibility that it might be a commentary on the freedom that charm and wealth affords cannot be ruled out entirely though.

One thing you can always say about Korine, he's gonna establish tone and stick to it. I did enjoy most of the performances; obviously McConaughey is the standout. There's a psychological dissatisfaction with the mere fleeting moments of consequence in the movie held up against all of Moondog's negative actions, but I mean at the end of the day, it's a stoner fantasy, and it works better for me personally to believe that everything beyond a certain point is either hallucination or a coma dream.

A love song to the postmodern art of slacking very hard. Characters of varying levels of absurdity do their best to achieve a whole bunch of nothing. Somewhere in there is a deeper meaning about enjoying life to the fullest. Also, if your joints aren't as big as the joints in this movie, stop smoking immediatly, you poser.

Basically Spring Breakers going full rogue and poetic and chemical, with absolutely no sense of plot to the point this is almost a low-fantasy satire of itself: self-destructive, hilarious, rampage. The cast is just pure heavenly mayhem. Now I need to rewatch this drunk or stoned, whatever.

Does it make any sense? Not really. Should it work? With its narrative inconsistencies, one-note characters, and protagonist who never learns his lesson and never grows at all, no. No it should not. & in some ways, it doesn't work. But in others, it somehow does. Not nearly as awful as you might expect, it features solid performances by a very talented (& star-studded) cast, some enjoyable moments, and a few genuine laughs. It's just out-there enough to be worth a watch, but it's no classic.

Harmony Korine re-demonstrates his capacity to go all-out with a fantasy, this time with a more well-defined main character. And it's an incredibly colorful (and at the same time - dark) character, splendidly realized by McConaughey. It's also quite funny, probably Korine's funniest movie.

Harmony Korine has slowly crept his way into becoming a pretty stellar filmmaker. The pieces were all there before, but they were so dirty it was often hard to decipher. Let's be clear, Moondog is also dirty, but Korine's brightly colored photography distracts from it. This is aggressively 2019.

It's either a joyous and completely batshit ode to nihilism, or a pointed classist critique. Or maybe it's somehow both? At any rate, it's a delight to experience Korine's brand of high-budget cinematic jazz once again.

An absolute joy of a film, which is certainly the kind of mood it should be putting viewers in -- not that it isn't also expressing its critiques of this kind of Americana late-stage capitalist hedonism, expressed in different ways through this colourful cast of characters. Masterful and expensive-looking imagery in each of this film's crevices cement this theme, but the emotionally driven soundtrack and editing bring you right next to these characters nonetheless. Woof woof!

This movie.... perplexed me. It's hard not not to dig its subdued and silly charm, while also being easily pulled in to it's off-the-wall and out-of-your-mind story. Whether it's any good is a whole other question. Personally, I enjoyed what I saw, but that might be able to be all I can say. None of us are going to remember The Beach Bum in 3 years, especially not Matthew Mconaughey.

I am very confused about this. On the one hand I like its style, its search for freedom and pleasure in a nihilistic world. But on the other hand, I don't like this being contingent on being rich and sort of immoral, ending up as nihilist again at the end. As some have noted, I want my old Korine back.

Korine didn't let up here. It is one thing to make a stoner comedy, it is another to completely lean into it as hard as he did here. Whether it's the acting (McConaughey is brilliant but everyone is a joy), the dialogue, the music or the way it looks, it's awesome. Korine again perfectly realized his vision of something with breezy, intoxicating kinetic energy. This has some great laughs, even has some heart, but ultimately it is what Moondog wanted from life: a hell of a lot of fun.

Although amusing in parts, some of the performances don't quite work, including perhaps McConaughey's. Exuberant in its refusal of contemporary conformism, this viewer still nevertheless prefers the perhaps less challenging but more affectionate portrayal of Jeff Bridges's Jeffrey Lebowski (or William Powell's Godfrey, for that matter), with whom Moondog might reasonably be compared, but perhaps that just indicates a limit to my taste for fantasy. Still, it does succeed in conjuring a feeling.

I tried to explain the chain-of-events in this film to my girlfriend and it sounded even more ridiculous out loud. The most fun I've had watching a movie this year. It intentionally negates any possibility of tension early on despite a seemingly tragic catalyst and it becomes pure ego-fantasy. And it's beautiful. "The world is conspiring to make me happy." This film is conspiring to make me happy.

This was more or less what I expected from Korine. It fits in well with his other films, and especially Spring Breakers. I had a fairly good time with it. I didn't expect too much from it, and that's what I got. I though it was well shot, and it was funny, and the performances from McConaughey, Efron and Lawrence were all great. So, yeah, even though it felt familiar being from Korine, it still felt fresh and unlike most films out there, especially ones starring big Hollywood actors.

Tolerance for the “stoner movie” genre will likely dictate your response to this intermittently interesting, *very* shaggy portrait of McConaughey’s eccentric; there’s no real form or plotting momentum here, just a loosely connected string of vignettes; eventually, the lack of point or purpose becomes wearying, though some sequences stand-out – “Is that all there is?” and the Lawrence cameo are the highlights. Korine always has a nice feel for his milieu, but it’s all more or less for naught.

That was one weird movie. It was funny, though, with plenty of moments that made me laugh. The cast was great and fit their roles perfectly, so that even if I could not entirely get into the plot (or the lack of thereof), it was still enjoyable. My favorite thing about it were the colors, though. The way the neons shine against the darkness and the sunsets paint the sky and the sea, or the party lights glow against the waves in the swimming pool, it was very captivating and beautiful to watch.

Stoner comedy? Hedonistic, nihilistic art movie with fun elements in it? Not sure, but even though it lacks identity and that it sometimes looks half of the movie was improvised, movie has quite some charm. Story is poor, but it has great characters and madhouse-like scenes. Very likable, especially if you appreciate eccentric, off the planet people and their 'another dimension' acts. This is what you get when you put a Beatnik in a 2019 Hollywood movie. High rating because theme talks to my h

Kind of like a feature length MTV styled fever-montage; there's no straight exposition, it comes across as bits and pieces in an expert arrangement. Which further sounds to me like Neon Demon, if it was a stoner comedy. I'm not satisfied that Korine has pushed any further from Spring Breakers, and this feels like another - fluffier and less inconoclastic - movie from the same world.

A gorgeous movie about the burnout guy you see in every coastal bar in Florida but portrayed as a mad genius... and it works. Matthew McConaughey absolutely nails it as this creature and should garner Best Actor consideration for it, but won't. The story is unpredictable but not manic. The side characters are not very well acted, and you kind of don't care much about them as a result and that's a bit of a downer. The whole thing feels like a dream, much like Spring Breakers.

This continues many of the same things Korine played with in Spring Breakers: a genuine love and nostalgia for trashy hedonism, the Malick-esque intuitive editing and of course the gorgeously shot weed-filtered shimmer of Florida dusk. There's not quite as much to dig into here (this is more or less just a stoner comedy) but I'm just so happy that Korine's been able to carve out his niche and populate it with genuine movie stars willing to follow his bizarre muse to the ends of the earth.

The story attempts to show a character's supposed depth, create fun moments, create empathy specially towards the main character; despite McConaughey's good work all of this elements are poorly executed and none of this really materializes on screen due to a poor screenplay and direction. It could've been a decent movie, but it ends up being a poorly executed project. Ideas only (a concept behind the character and what he intends to mean) don't necessarily make a good movie.

I always find Harmony Korine's films kind of polarizing. Beach Bum is a fun throwback to the stoner film genre, but beneath the surface, there isn't that much going on. Still, the film paints an other-worldly setting where the riff raff of the Florida Keys blend seamlessly with the uber-wealthy, and Matthew McConnaughey is fantastic. In fact, there's a number of big actors that are nearly unrecognizable in this - from Jonah Hill to Zac Efron.

I rarely understand art. Most artists self-censors way too much and that seems antithetical to me. Korine doesn't do that, or at least that's my impression. You can tell he is a very inquisitive person who values sincerity. He takes what he has, the good and ugly, and is able to find the beauty and humor in it all. His previous films were kind of a chore; this one is a breeze. Filmmaking at its best. It's possible that he has finally perfected the craft.

Two questions: 1) Would a documentary about McConaughey's life look much different from this? 2) Isn't this Korine's exploration of his own artistic process and ethos a la Fellini's 8 1/2? I watched his appearances on Letterman again after I finished this--so much about Moondog seems manifest in Korine's (public) persona.
