Garland's novel centers on a young nicotine-addicted traveler named Richard, an avid pop-culture buff with a particular love for video games and Vietnam War movies. While at a hotel in Bangkok, he finds a map left by his strange, whacked-out neighbor, who just committed suicide. The map supposedly leads to a legendary island paradise where some other wayward souls have settled. (imdb)

If you look upon 'Shutter Island' as 'Leonardo DiCaprio meets an old psychologist friend on the street' then 'The Beach' is 'Leonardo DiCaprio goes surfing'. I don't know what I'm trying to say with that. What a horrible review this is turning out to be. Virginie! Marry me!

A surprising good film with an amazing soundtrack. Some visually beautiful shots of the beach. Admittedly it does feel like a slightly updated Lord of the Flies with adults but it's still quite a good movie.

A confused film that left me confused, but not entirely bored. It's a strange universe where the characters are so contradictory and surprisingly uncaring about actions ("sure mate, we'll come to a remote and possibly dangerous tropical island with you and you can fuck my girlfriend. I won't care") And how many movies set in a tropical island have a Banjo Kazooie themed montage? I don't know what to make of it. But it's Danny Boyle, at his worst, but still better than some at their best.

Idiots being idiots. Assholes being assholes. People being people. Weirdly upbeat ending though. Like he came back from some crazy amusement park adventure. As opposed to a crazy fucked up amusement park adventure, where you eventually become a psychopath and then find out the owner of the park wants to murder you, which totally kills the mood, so everyone goes home.

I had a great fun watching this one. Mainly because it reminded me so much of my present circumstances and this little community of people I am living with. That tab of acid probably helped too, as I'm still not sure if this film really is as trippy as it seemed. The story is really good. It a sort of bittersweet romantic fable for dreamers, drugies, lovers. It surpassed any expectations I had, and my timing to watch it was just perfect.

Good beginning, good ending, kinda boring in between. It's more suitable for a novel because it tries to show how the characters change, but become boring comparing to its fascinating beginning. It's like a adult version of lord of the flies.

Seen: 2. Uneven and unlikeable. The first half isn't bad, despite being full of itself. It's a unique adventure, with some strong opinions about the modern world. The jungle commando freak out in the second half sets things off the deep end. This is probably my least favorite DiCaprio performance ever, and maybe that's the material's fault. He is committed, but he is also all over the place. Speaking of all over the place, the tone takes you for a ride, to put it politely.

Beautifully shot and a fantastic location, DiCaprio shows his range in a movie that is completely centered around him and yet he carries it wonderfully. I think this is the first Leo movie that shows he's a real actor and not a teen heart throb or a kid that can act retarded, even if it's with some semi-embarrassing frosted tips

For being so well-respected it's really a very superficial and predictable plot. With only the slightest imagination the whole plot can be determined in the first two scenes. Yet, the photography of the tropical terrain/ocean is possibly the best yet in the world. But again, the editing is total shit.

Boyle's one lone misfire isn't as bad as some would have you believe, but it's certainly not near as good as it should be. The book is infinitely better, and Garland should have written the screenplay himself. His messages remain mostly intact, but while I agree with them, the film has an air about it -- it just seems pompous and shallow. Carlyle and Swinton give memorable performances, and the soundtrack and locations are excellent. It just could have been so much more.

Would have been so much better if it had been Ewan McGregor as originally planned instead of Leo, and if they'd stuck to the book where he doesn't get laid at all. You end up disliking Richard because DiCaprio plays him as arrogant and loud whereas in the novel he's a sympathetic (and pathetic) nerd. Too bad because the premise, the setting and the soundtrack are all pretty great.

Very cliche and full of annoying international "hippie backpacker" type characters that it becomes grating at times. DiCaprio is good in this but he was punching far below his weight acting wise. This film has a couple decent songs on the soundtrack that really set the mood. Overall the story is mediocre and pedestrian just like the book it's based on but it's entertaining enough. The location is also beautiful.

Walk into a backpackers and you'll find the same mob as the stereotypes that parade around in this mixed-sex Lord of the Flies. The story is intriguing and the locales are pretty, but after the second half of the movie, the script starts to fast-forward the plot. The whole going mental phase of DiCaprio seems a bit far fetched, since he wasn't, at the time, quite capable as an actor to carry the heavier scenes. In the end, The Beach is confusing, it's hard to tell if it's a thriller or a feel good movie and the message it's supposedly trying to convey is somewhat ambiguous.

An MTV-"meditation" on human's incapability for utopia. Despite the sloppy pace, tone and style, there's truth to be found, possibly indeliberately. Dicaprio works well as a pseudo escapist buffoon who tears down everything in his path, but the changes from the book are all horseshit, especially the fangirl-service romance crap. Wasted potential here, someone should do this again and better.

Not terrible, just not very good. Not up to par for a Leo/Boyle combo, but this was pretty early in both of their careers. Everything felt a little rushed, especially the 3rd act. Leo goes crazy because he is told to camp on a hill for a few days? ok. Late 90s Moby + Thailand beaches captured by Boyle = awesome.
