MGM's answer to Warner Brothers' gangster films is really tough little pre-code number. Ford and Harlow share a really racy seduction scene, and the violent climax is right out of a Sam Peckinpah film. Mickey Rooney has his uncredited screen debut as Huston's son.

Engrossing crime drama that tries to take the police's side rather than the gangsters. The cliches are all pretty transparent today, but Huston and Ford's chemistry and the rather nasty content contained make it an exciting watch, and an interesting time capsule.

Cops vs gangsters! To be honest the movie is fairly average except it has some insanity that makes it worth wild. Hey, it's got Jean Harlow in all her pre-code glory! It's got police chief Walter Huston as non-bullshit one can get! It's got Wallace Ford as the weakling brother turned crooked! It's got old Tully Marshall putting on a mad speech in court! It's got Jean Hersholt as the head mob boss! And it's got the most absurd kamikaze ending ever!

A powerful early gangster film, featuring a powerful performance by Walter Huston as the police chief a final shoot-out of nearly Wild Bunch proportions. Watch for a very young Mickey Rooney.
