The Bedford Incident

1965
Drama, Suspense/Thriller

Richard Widmark plays a hardened cold-warrior and captain of the American destroyer USS Bedford. Sidney Poitier is a reporter given permission to interview the captain during a routine patrol. Poitier gets more than he bargained for when the Bedford discovers a Soviet sub in the depths and the captain begins a relentless pursuit, pushing his crew to the breaking point. This one's grim tension to the end. (imdb)

The German Commodore is blatantly the best character: his wisened eyes containing every intense moment from every U-boat movie.

In a sense Harris's response to DR. STRANGELOVE: balking at Kubrick's satirical approach, he (amicably) ended their professional relationship and made his debut with this deathly serious take. It's no masterpiece but a tense and involving thriller that thoughtfully addresses the abstractions and ambiguities, technological and transnational, introduced by the Cold War. The chase sequences best many that cost much more. (Worth noting that Harris later called STRANGELOVE his favourite Kubrick.)

Tense, suspenseful, but perhaps a little preachy.

Inexplicably entertaining 60's anti-nuclear paranoia flick. Logistically, I'm not sure why the captain didn't just shoot Poitier and Balsam and throw the bodies overboard but, hey, it would've made it a much shorter movie. The ending, however, is a little silly but still completely plausible.

"The Caine Mutiny" meets "Hunt For Red October" meets "On The Beach". Don't expect a high-budget film, but it makes an excellent double feature with Dr. Strangelove (which I coincidentally watched the same weekend.) Poitier is his usual scene-stealing self, but has a smaller role than you'd expect for such a star. The Cold War itself takes center stage here, as well it should. A must-see for anyone interested in sub warfare or this period in history.

Excellent sibling of the Kubrick-Harris co-productions of the 60s. Not quite top-tier, but not far off, either.

Excellent drama, brilliant cast including a superb Richard Widmark, Sidney Poitier and you get a peek at a very young Donald Sutherland. Worth a look.
