Father O'Malley the unconventional priest from 'Going My Way' continues his work for the Catholic Church. This time he is sent to St. Mary's, a run-down parochial school on the verge of condemnation. He and Sister Benedict work together in an attempt to save the school, though their differing methods often lead to good-natured disagreements. (imdb)

I enjoyed Ingrid Bergman as a tomboyish nun, but otherwise found this incredibly boring.

A feel-good family-friendly drama that's slight and heartwarming to a fault. There are plenty of cutesy child actors and life lessons to go around, as you'd expect. Bergman has some enjoyable moments (a subplot about her teaching a young boy how to box is good fun), and she's reliably good anyway, but Crosby's Father O'Malley is just a terribly uninteresting character. The songs, while admittedly not bogging the film down too much, drag on as well.

Crosby's O'Malley is as annoying to watch as in Going My Way, but at least Bergman provides a somewhat interesting foil. How can you not enjoy seeing her dressed as a nun, teaching a child to box. Still, it gets old and the whole thing is hideously naive in a strangely repugnant way.

Hasn't aged well. Despite good performances and occasional humor, it's too long, poorly paced, and even McCarey's direction can't save the dull story. Also, why is the parson playing matchmaker for a man who abandoned his wife and child 13 years ago? I feel sorry for old man Bogardus, who is hounded by a smug singing parson and his selfish, harpy pack of vicious nuns! And to add insult to injury, his own doctor tells the parson what the old bastard is dying of. Lousy and disappointing.

Wholesome and charming without getting too saccharine. The episodic structure works for the most part, though some scenes could stand some trimming, seemingly designed to let performances or songs go on as long as possible.

You've got to credit director Leo McCarey on this one. The screenplay is straight-up conventional sentimentality, but the realization is much more delicate and nuanced. Only the (studio decreed?) musical interludes hit the wrong note, as the sumblimated romance between Father O'Malley and Sister Benedict fuels this parable of rehabilitation. McCarey's long takes draw you in, and the framing in the conversations doesn't jackrabbit between shot/reverse-shot, but rather brings everyone together.

A little too heartwarming, but Ingrid Bergman and the natural acting of the little kids in the Christmas play make it work.

Just brimming with wholesomeness, a perfect little world where everyone is nice and everything works out in the end. It's enough sugar-coated fluff to choke you to death. And it's not even entertaining fluff. The characters are likeable, but it doesn't matter much when the entire cast is so perfect and good-natured. The situations are predictable and the songs are dull. I admit the movie is feel-good, but it doesn't work very hard to earn it.
