The film's not bad, it has great performances, which helps a lot, and an interesting enough core, but the dry humour from the opening minutes seems to dissipate quickly, displaced by old people melodrama. All the little observations and occurrences seemed trite, and so much of the build up takes a long time, just for a quick and neat resolution with compact little lesson.

Like a unique cross between Lost in Translation, Little Miss Sunshine, and Slumdog Millionaire. Though the movie is far from perfect, the characters are each fascinating to watch and the themes and emotions the movie evokes really touched a nerve in me. It hits on human-existentialism, finding meaning in life, love, changing ourselves and our environment, accepting others who are different than us, growing old, and losing people we care about. It also has a lot of funny moments.

Too loosely woven; the multiple plots only intersect when one character informs another how their day's been. And there's the strong sense, though lip service is paid to the contrary, that India's being presented as a people eager to serve and amuse us westerners.

anyone who says that it's a bad movie is definitely a hardcore snob. it's impossible not to like it: the cast is superb (Dench, Nighy and Smith in a one film?), the setting colourful and vibrating, the plot, well, it's not new, but it's there to make you feel good. it has is faults, yep. but still, watching this film was a fantastic experience. but if you're one of those folks who hate love actually and are proud of it, save your time and go away from this film.

Dench and Nighy are the highlight of an otherwise excruciatingly tedious, overlong character piece, riddled with some of the most tired movie conventions. Could've also easily taken place anywhere else; Using India as a filming location has become as exotic as drinking a Piña colada.

The actors are excellent. It's easy for me to pick Bill Nighy's as my favorite performance, but the more I think about the different scenes, the less confident I am in this choice, for there is something wonderful about them all. Many of the early scenes are comical as fish-out-of-water sequences, but the film rises above that easy plot device and with each successive scene develops a growing sympathy for them all, almost right up to the very, very end.

It's story telling is cinema-smooth, cliche, predictable and beneath the good humour and smiled witticisms horribly subversive of Indian culture. Having said all that I believe the saving grace is the cast, a British tour de force of acting elite, who all take their cardboard characters and breath an incredible amount of life into them. This is an enjoyable comedy/drama if you're not looking for anything challenging and are perfectly happy to go along for the ride.

A film about a bunch of old people that move to India so they can all fucking die. But, holy shit, did they pull together a stellar cast! If not for the star power of the film (Dench, Smith, Wilkinson, Nighy) then this would be unwatchable, but as it is, it occasionally becomes charming.

While it's nice to see a movie which focuses on the viewpoint of older people, it would be nice if someone had bothered to write a character for any of them. Basically, the premise of this movie is that a bunch of stereotyped old people go somewhere foreign and they change to a different stereotype. Cack-handed.

It is every bit as witty as one would expect a movie starring Wilkinson-Dench-Nighy and company to be, and involves a part of the world that is not unexplored by film but perhaps under-appreciated and/or overly stereotyped. Moving, quirky dialogue is the main attraction to this film, but underneath that is a film that slowly envelops you like the land it portrays & you come to associate yourself with the characters as potential visions of your future self. Absolutely worth the time to watch it.

This safe, pedestrian film feels a bit too paint-by-numbers at first, and for every interesting older character there's another coffin-dodger you want dead. Dev Patel was shamefully under-used. In fact, the Indian setting and environment was one of the stronger characters in the film. As the various stories unfold and themes are juggled it gets more interesting, but never steps beyond the threshold of 'safe British free-bus-pass crowd-pleaser' film. More of a Slumdog cash-in / spin-off.

Supported by a brilliant ensemble cast, this warm film might well be one of the must-sees of the year. Nighy, Dench and Wilkinson are amazing as ever, while Patel is charming with his happiness-wisdom. Not the film with the deepest meaning or the most elaborate plot, what it does, it does exactly right.

It has some great actors and actresses, who almost all get to show this. But as it is lacking some depth, it didn't really get me hooked. Maybe because of the many characters.

Great airplane movie, but not a great movie. Too many characters, and you don't ever get a chance to really care about any of them. They should have just chosen one and told his or her story.

This movie is pretty charming but the charm gets lost in the films length. The cast is excellent starring Tom Wilkinson, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy. So there are no problems at all with excellent acting. I suppose this movie was long to show the journey these old couples go through in India... but you just lose interest after a while. I really loved Dev Patel and Tena Desae as the two lovers who had to fight for their relationship despite their families wishes.

It's easy to call this one heavy-handed, but the fact is that this is not: Madden's touch is so light that sometimes it's even hard to feel anything for his characters, despite the confessed inspirational, everything-will-be-all-right-in-the-end script. The best moments, slowly built by warm performances, come from Judy and Nighy -- he's so good that I actually want to be an old man just like him.

Really nice story, mostly drama but some comedy as well. Some of the best lines in a movie recently. Judi Dench and Tom Wilkinson were excellent, and it was nice to see Penelope Wilton and Maggie Smith outside of Downton Abbey (though in similar roles). I look forward to watching the sequel.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel combines a clever screenplay with an immensely talented cast of veteran actors to deliver a crowd-pleaser of a movie ... that's also far too simplistically resolved and lacks conflict. It's not that funny, some of the drama doesn't work out as well as it should, and while it's almost certain to make you smile, it won't make you reflect on life or think about anything. It's fun for observing India, and it acts as a paid vacation for the actors. Fun, but fleeting.

I fucking love Bill Nighy. This film is obviously targeted to a very specific demographic and most of the younger generations will find it a soggy snoozefest but I'm in my mid-20s and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's so warm and charming. Absolutely grand cast that makes it a delight to watch.

"The film is home to some unique redeeming factors, but it panders to viewers by diluting its lesson, which teaches that some comfort zones can only be truly abandoned on the other side of the world." - R. Kurt Osenlund

Though in ways it's predictably British (in terms of dialogue and wit), it's a touching romp through India with some very relatable characters. Each experiences a situation or emotion with which viewers can empathize. The theme explored is the idea that it's never too late to change or experience new things. Life is always evolving and new opportunities abound. The big complaint is that there's not enough time to get to know each character very well and each story arc is a tad underdeveloped.

An utter charmer; a delightful film that it is admittedly elevated by its platinum cast line-up than anything inherently unique or insightful within the screenplay. All seven leads/second leads bring immeasurable charisma to their parts, and director Madden keeps things bouncing along nicely in the Indian locale. The film aims no higher than to give its audience a good time, and when it delivers so well, why carp?

Sweet, colorful, beautiful movie about old people trying to break their habits, and young people trying to find their way. Takes a little bit of time to warm up, but once it does depth is found and the characters are so lovable and I admire their journeys. Hopeful.

It has some corny unbelievable, unrealistic acts and actions and also had some cultural presentation issues. These are the weak side of the movie. But on the other side its a heart warming story with a stellar cast. And actually ı like the idea that "old people" movies. Cuz these are stellar artists and in mainstream cinema the only eligible roles for them is about either parenthood nor mentorship. But with this type of movie we can understand our elders as self individuals not decoratives.
