William Wyler's engrossing masterpiece hits hard at every turn and crafts a story rife with exceptional drama, heartfelt emotion and underlying humour. A scene in particular, featuring Homer Parrish (Harold Russell) as he unveils the full extent of his disability to his wife-to-be, is like no scene I have ever seen, it was completely moving, and then his everlasting smile as he sheds a single tear, powerfully complex in emotional value and extremely well-executed.

A masterpiece of a film. The entire cast delivers wonderful performances, but what I appreciated most was the realism of the script.

William Wyler wanted to make a movie depicting the challenges servicemen face when they return home: finding work, picking up life with spouses and families, trying to forget the horrors of war and learning to live with a disability. The three servicemen played by Hollywood greats Dana Andrews, Frederick March and newcomer, Harold Russell (who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor here) do a great job of showing us the battle that also awaits when a veteran comes home from WWII.

"I'm sorry, Major... no collateral, no hill. So we didn't take the hill and we lost the war." okay, so that was hilarious. about the only good bit in this dull and interminable 163 minute melodrama about veterans struggling with normality after the turbulence of war. not to mention some really gross jokes about the japanese, helped along by a healthy dose of patriotism. first william wyler film.

It was a damn shame that, when things got interesting, the film emphasized the sissy romantic subplot of Fred Derry over everything else. At that point, I felt cheated, as the moral dilemmas, along with the physical and mental challenges faced by these veterans, really struck a chord in me. But apart from that, Sherwood's insightful script and Wyler's craftsmanship make for an absorbing drama. A true American Classic, yet not the masterpiece I hoped it to be.

The Best Years of Our Lives is still one of the most powerful war films ever made, all about what it does to the people involved in it. It's still 100% relevant even today, the performances are still powerful, and at three hours long, it earns its runtime admirably. A total classic.
