Poignant, wistful masterpiece is a searing indictment of war-time sacrifice (and an encounter with a conspiracy monger seems a direct jab at contemporary "Fake News"). Its returning veterans are never undermined, even as we never see them in the "glamour" of battle (which would have been a clanging misstep). Pays full tribute to the emotional, while never succumbing to sentimentality, thanks to Wyler's masterful contrasting of the epic with the personal; uniformly great performances by his cast.

William Wyler does an amazing job telling the story of three men that chance brings together, and their trepidation of the future binds. Wyler's use of the taxi window to frame the homecoming forces us to experience this emotional scene like we were in the taxi. Drawing you into the story and bonding you to the characters.

I simply found this a beautiful well-paced return to society for these war heroes. Regardless of depression, trauma, change of heart, William Wyler and his top-class selection of actors handled this to near perfection in that senses of classic romanticism. I was sincerely moved. One of the Academy winners that probable deserved its award.

Has some of that old-timey stuffiness, but it's also pushing back against that stuffiness at many turns. It's long, but it didn't feel that long. The acting was alright, but the sense of humor won me over in many scenes. I wasn't expecting much, and it surprised me. I can't say that I'm ever planning on seeing it again though.

An oddly contemporary film about PTSD and the difficulty of transitioning from the war. I wish men still talked like this. In every film from, like, 75 years ago, they have this weird voice. How do I explain this better? Just pretend I am uploading an audio recording of me doing the voice. Do you get it now?

There is something very sobering about The Best Years of Our Lives. Especially given the fact that the general idea that WWII is the last "great" war that was morally righteous. Without any violence, this is one of the best anti-war films ever made.

Well color me surprised! I expected to be bored sitting through this almost three hour film, but I was captivated by the characters. Three men. One young, one "old" and one somewhere in between. All of them are introduced wonderfully and their camaraderie really shines through. Homer's story is the one that is the most interesting and the one that has a fulfilling ending. I do believe the film could have addressed a bit more of the war-drama, but it was definitely worthwhile.

The sterilized boomer bait dampens the relevance of the societal commentary here, but nevertheless it's a neat little time capsule sealed within the Best Picture vault.

There are things I like: the (for the time) progressive and sympathtic portrayals of disability and trauma and the solid character development, but also things I don't like it's strong emphasis on traditional gender roles, it's slow place, and overly-long runtime. A film that was undoubtedly an influential and important bit of film history, whose relevence has waned in the modern day. Harold Russell was outstanding in his role, impossible to believe he had never acted before in his life.

I'd like to think this was supposed to be about the dark aftertaste of what war does to soldiers and how it affects them long after they've left the battlefield. Instead, we're saddled with some aimless antics of Stephenson getting wasted all the time, Homer learning a piano tune and a meandering romantic subplot that takes a hell of a long time to amount to anything even worthwhile. A respectable but mostly unremarkable effort from Wyler, of whom I was never a big fan to begin with.

Slightly dated story about three men returning from World War II and trying to pick up their lives again. There's a little too much coincidence in their crossing paths over and over again, but it doesn't drag the film too much. (A modern remake might focus on the mental anguish a bit more, for better or worse.) All in all, a good movie, but one I wish ran about 20 minutes shorter.
