When "The Dude" Lebowski is mistaken for a millionaire Lebowski, two thugs urinate on his rug to coerce him into paying a debt he knows nothing about. While attempting to gain recompense for the ruined rug from his wealthy counterpart, he accepts a one-time job with high pay-off. He enlists the help of his bowling buddy, Walter, a gun-toting Jewish-convert with anger issues. Deception leads to more trouble, and it soon seems that everyone from porn empire tycoons to nihilists want something from The Dude. (imdb)

Black comedy with an intricate noir style plot following Dude's deliciously pointless quest for woven yarn. There's a dynamic, varied soundtrack and gorgeously trashy dream sequences, but it's the characters and diaglogue that sparkle. The breadth of witty exchanges and curious topics heighten each of the eclectic characters appeal, foremost the wryly mellow Dude and bombastically militant Walter. Did I mention it's fucking hilarious? Infinite joy from infinite viewings. Abide.

I may be overrating this, but I loved every second of The Big Lebowski. A premise that seems utterly stupid to some will probably be ingenious to others. I, for one, loved the story. It had me laughing out loud for 2 hours and Jeff Bridges does as awesome as usual while John Goodman made this my favorite role from him. Love the Coen brothers and I love this. You will either love or hate this. I also loved the music. Good filmmaking all around and one of the best comedies maybe ever. Dude abides.

How many movies have their very own festivals? This film contains some of the greatest characters and quotes in movie history. It's almost Impossible to talk about this movie with other fans without it turning into a quote-a-thon. There is a lot of 'you either get it or you don't' concerning this movie and to those who don't I would suggest waiting a little while and watching it a second time before giving up on it completely. I think I have converted at least 10 people on second viewings.

Perfectly bizarre. The characters are all 'out there', but written and played so well that each seems deep and fully realized. The plot gets convoluted, as does any noir mystery, but the movie is all about the characters and their interplay, the plot is just an excuse to bring them together. What makes it great is how the intricacies of the plot become clearer with repeat viewings: true to its Chandler structure, all the clues are there -- the first-time viewer is just too confused to spot them.

A fine historical film, set back in the early nineties. This is the movie that made me realise that the Coens are constructing, through their body of work, a special Coenesque counter-history of 20th-century America (update: now includes 19th-century America), with each film set in a different historical period. Lebowski is the role that Bridges was born to play, and a perfect expression of a certain type of human being. My recollection is that critics and audiences initially didn't like it.

Either you love this movie, or you just don't get what all the fuss is about. I for one think it is comedy at its most brilliant. Every ridiculous character has their own role in the madness, and one almost wished they each would get their own story told. Who doesn't want to see Walter, or Jesus back story?

The first time I watched this, years ago, I didn't quite love it. How that changed with my second viewing! TBL is smart, hilarious, refreshing and deliciously twisted at times. Might be the best casting job in the history of cinema; so many amazing characters brought to the screen with such perfect delivery. Quotable until infinity.

The Coens craft a truly unique movie with this darkly comedic, detective style noir set in early 90s California. In true Coen tradition, the story moves from one odd encounter to another, full of quirky, unforgettable characters, with Bridges' inept stoner at the centre of it all. The script is endlessly witty, complete with surreal, drug-induced dream sequences, the soundtrack fits superbly, and Bridges is terrific, supported heroically by Goodman's dangerously short-fused Vietnam vet.

It walks a fine line between being hilariously ridiculous and starkly sobering, and pulls it off as only the Coen brothers can do. Some very fine acting by some of the industry's best, and the kind of writing that one can only see if but a few times in a life time. Overall an amazing story with everyone involved doing their perfect best.

"The Dude" abides the Coen Brothers and company created some of the greatest characters and dialogue ever in a comedy. Jeff Bridges stars as "The Dude", a character so great, he has inspired his very own religion. However it isn't just "The Dude", the movie is full of hilarious characters with each being more memorable than the next. In the end, the movie's complicated plot is unimportant, but instead the characters struggling with this mess of a mystery makes for plenty of entertainment.

One of the most purely fun and entertaining films there is. The Coens brilliantly succeed at what they do best: making odd characters come to life and creating hilarious situations for them to interact within. It certainly reaches a level of quotability that few other films come near.

This could be one of the funniest films of all time. The Coen Bros. outdid themselves with the variety of zany characters intentionally not subtly placed together in a hilarious scandal. A wonderful pulp-inspired, stoner-infused mystery-comedy that's more clever than it first lets on. Loaded with great characterizations, most notably Goodman as Walter Sobchak. Even those with little dialogue and screentime, like Buscemi and Turturro, are incredibly memorable. Probably the funniest movie I've ever seen, with the most quotable dialogue.

A more fascinating concept than many give it credit for: a film noir mystery with a protagonist who is completely out of the loop. More details are picked up on multiple viewings which is rather encouraged after leaving the viewer likely disoriented, but fascinated after the first. Combine that with some of the most quotable and hilarious lines of all time and that about wraps 'er all up.

One of the most consistently hilarious and best comedies I've seen. The characters are awesome, as is the acting. Great dialogue, as well as the Coen's taking a tried and true story formula of a guy getting in over his head and makes it fresh, and above all, hilarious. The Dude's reaction to everything is pitch perfect, as he has to deal with all kinds of crazy characters. Never thought I'd like a movie with Tara Reid in it.

The story structure is similar to the great South Park episodes -- protagonist gets caught up in grand scheme simply because of his interest in some trivial item. It's got the Coen staples of inept criminals and wild (yet somehow believable) characters. And it's so quotable. One for the ages.

This film gets more hilarious with each viewing, but what makes it worthwhile is that it has a lot more going on as well. It's the Coen's critique on the entire realm of noir film theory and their love song to the California/slacker approach of applying personal philosophy to life. It's not their deepest or moodiest film, but it works extremely well on all of its various levels, and the hilarious quotables tie it all together.

A very clever film, and not in a bad way. It explores noir conventions from a skewed viewpoint, infusing them with that off-kilter Coen style. The layers of plot unfold nicely and it's a satisfying journey. I just don't think it's funny. The performances are too mannered, even for a Coens film, almost every character rubs me the wrong way. Many of the oft-quoted lines feel like a concentrated effort to concoct a catchphrase. It has a number of admirable qualities. It just doesn't make me laugh.

The Big Lebowski lacks the tight perfection of Fargo or tense excitement of No Country for Old Men. On the other hand, it's a mess, and all the better for it. Jeff Bridges is note-perfect as the laid back stoner Dude, and John Goodman steals scenes as his foil, a ticking time-bomb Vietnam vet. The rest of the cast serves their own roles perfectly, and the scripting and directing by the Coen Brothers is as fitting as ever. It's not their best movie, but is their funniest.

One the Coen brothers' best films. It's a hilarious, entertaining noir-inspired story with memorable characters and a great cast. In terms of quotability and pop culture influence, it's up there with Casablanca. Only slightly overrated, due mostly to The Dude's large fan base. But over another watch and some mental gestation, it really is quite obvious if partially inarticulable. Now I'm fighting an urge just to quote half the movie and be done with it, which, I hope, expresses my belief in how ridiculously catchy the dialogs were. About isms, ethos, "Creedence", or just, like, your opinion, man. Noir's preoccupation with war is stratified here, set during the Gulf War with veterans of Vietnam and Korea caught in the curiously German/Polish conflict - there seems to be a theme of unchecked aggression vs. unnecessary escalation. The Dude's slacker Christ vibe is a lovable antidote to the hard-boiled detective archetype, out there takin' it easy for all us sinners. Pineapple Express owes a debt to this one.
