Brilliant movie about the horrors of war. I wish I could go into the impact of specific scenes and details. The first half is lighthearted; with romance, comedy and a guys camp feel. One soldier even says he could get used to this war. Then all is upended. The battle scenes are perfect and the march sequence is a masterwork. The silent medium is eerie and jarring, with violent visuals and utter lack of sound effects. Modern movies might make the point with blood and gore. This is more effective.

A big foundational picture of the grand (anti-)war film genre, that also managed to be one of the highest-grossing productions of the silent era. There's definitely something very Hollywood about how Vidor sets up sympathy via an abundance of romance and cheerful humor. However, it's the second half that makes this one of the big touchstones of serious war pictures--with the "parade" itself leading into the nonchalant brutality of Belleau Wood, and the harrowing trench sequences.

There's a small strech where this goes on a sentimental tirade against war, and the idea behind this seems to be getting that to the mainstream through a prestige picture that otherwise is almost hell bent on being likeable. Production is sturdy, some instances of battle sequences are strong and well imagined, the feeling against war, from a modern perspective, is almost there; but back then it hit a nerve, from what I read.

Much of the film plays almost like a rom-com, and between the drawn-out courtship and the comic relief provided by Tom O'Brien and Karl Dane, my patience was wearing thin. But then the soldiers head for the front, marked by the ominous caption, "IT HAD BEGUN." The battle scene that follows is intense, and while Vidor doesn't film it as straightforward realism, the scene draws much of its power from showing the darker side of war. It's what raises the film above the norm.

Enjoyable and at times touching, humane anti-war film with very well done war scenes. It's just not very subtle with its anti-war message which, I think , has been portrayed better in some later anti-war movies.

For the first hour of this, I was thinking: "gee, this is awfully light-hearted for a WWI movie". Then right at the halfway point, shit gets real. The ensuing battle scenes are absolutely harrowing, and still hold up. That first march through the woods is utterly chilling. This is marvelous filmmaking that seems way ahead of its time. The film ends on a bittersweet note that I must admit choked me up a little. Besides the slapsticky bits in the first half, this deserves its esteemed reputation.

The excellent battle scenes in this war film evoke the terror and disorientation of the fight. However, rather than make it a dour, two-hour affair about the scars of battle, Stallings writes a romantic story to frame the action, using it well to offset the pain and struggle of the battle. The film also documents life as a soldier off the battlefield, using much of the first hour to show marching, waiting, and carousing. Its attention to detail and its heart make it one of the great war films.

suffers only a bit from not being able to choose its genre, and therefore cant explore it to the fullest. this movie has some of the most grueling and horrific war scenes i've ever seen--that even 80 years later hold their power. the ending is a bit abrupt, but serves to bring the spirits up i suppose.

The narrative wanders a bit and the final 10 minutes are pretty manipulative, but the rest of the film is superb. An excellent war film that takes you through the different emotions and thoughts of young enlisted man in WWI.
