At first it looked like a comedy gangster film with Ricardo Cortez and his corny gang ganging up on poor pharmacist Charles Farrell and his gal Bette Davis, but then it turned into a murderous gangster film and.... the atmosphere didn't really fit that. Too many comic characters. But I enjoyed it anyway even if they couldn't decide on the direction to take this. This was one of Davis' random 'pretty blond' roles Warner Bros kept forcing on her.

The film isn't bad but it has some severe tonal issues that ruined any punch that the film might've had. In a lot of ways, this is a comedy but there are a few serious and questionable scenes that just don't fit and the ending leaves a few unanswered questions.

If you're tempted to watch this simply because you're a Bette Davis fan, save yourself the trouble...she isn't suited to the role of dutiful girlfriend/wife in the least. It's proof that Warner's were a bunch of idiots. Ricardo Cortez is the debonair (he sports the best suits in the picture) yet deeply stupid gangster--it's his picture (such as it is). Charles Farrell makes a pretty good patsy, but...you know...who cares? The plot is so poorly thought out that everything seems implausible.
