The Big Street

Absurd, top to bottom, and not in a charming way. More or less a waste of a fine Lucille Ball performance.

This is the movie that could have launched Lucille Ball to the A side of the movies, but the studios didn't let it happen. She was excellent in this unusual movie. It had comedy and emotional moments and a great cast of characters. Her costar was young Henry Fonda.

Lucille Ball tries a touching dramatic role.... and I still saw her as comedian. There was times when she mirrored her character splendidly, but for the most part her range was how we all love her from "I Love Lucy". A little too funny, even when not delivering comic material. That's simply her personality. Henry Fonda was supposed to be the real goof in this, and he delivered it in his own deadpan manner. And with so many funny faces supporting, the dramatic feeling was never really there.
