Nauseatingly Liberal, even for PBS. Over half the running time dedicated to how it's the *bad* police that need stopping and how great voting is.

I do not know much about the Black Panthers - and this did not enlighten me. Very partial; no contrary voices. A lot of trivia and no big picture. Even when they admitted in a rush the bad parts (pistol whipping, rape i.e pretty bad) it was written off as mental illness - but those were group acts! A more comprehensive and honest treatment with multiple voices would be a better film, and perhaps more nuance would have left me more sympathetic.

Not bad, although its presentation leaves it feeling a bit...sterile? sanitized? It's informative and does a good job of allowing the figures involved to do the heavy lifting of describing the history of the organization, its aims and its ideals, but it's packaged in a way that feels unfortunately family-friendly. I can't help but think a portrait of such an empowering movement should capture its righteously furious attitude.

The Black Panthers were a very important Marxist movement of the 20th with deep philosophical foundations and political strategies. This bad documentary tailored for liberals doesn't do justice to it at all. It remains on the identity politics level and even does that poorly. There would have been so much to talk about, Fred Hampton's views for example. It may still teach a few things to the hitherto uninformed.
