Utterly strange, grim, ugly and seedy little film seems like an inexplicable choice for Sellers, even though he is quite good in a completely straight role; his co-stars are fine, but struggle to differentiate themselves from each other. Apparently re-edited without the director's consent, the seeds of a refreshingly different take on the war film are there, but is ultimately defeated by the depressing and ultimately pointless bleakness of the enterprise. A curio at best.
