*** SPOILER *** God got lazy and instead of throwing in a new book and a prophet, sent a blind Denzel on a quest with the last copy of 2k old book. Denzel haven't read to the part of -Thou shalt not kill- yet, so he cruises around killing people to reach west totally neat and cool in sunglasses while there is no clear water source. Oldman is rehashing his trademark bad guy. Oh and also Mila Kunis is mannequining in tight clothes.

I did not expect The Book of Eli to be this good. It's a first-rate post-apocalyptic action thriller with touches of religion that humbly takes a close third behind The Road and Children of Men. Denzel Washington demonstrates his pure dominance and ascendancy towards the other cast members, while Oldman puts his veteran acting abilities to the test with his praiseworthy and honorable performance here. A strong film to begin the year.

Why does Eli keep doing unnecessary things? Why is there constant slow motion emphasis on unimportant actions? Why is there no color in the non-Cormac-McCarthy-ash-filled apocalypse? Why was there nobody on the production team who knew how to manage sound levels? The answers we will probably never know, and I doubt anybody will care enough about this to find out. I like Fallout and Mad Max, too, but you don't see me giving inexperienced directors my fanfic script and a blockbuster budget.

Evoked the same feeling as "Man on Fire" did: uninspired, boring and pretentious. Mila Kunis walking in the desert in slow-mo made me think of those Calvin Klein commercials. Watch "The Road" instead.

A cool concept that only had about thirty minutes of plot. Thus, it is stretched out to two hours meaning a lot of the movie doesn't really serve much purpose. It was still very pretty and the fight scenes were choreographed competently, so it wasn't all bad... I was just expecting more from Fallout: The Movie.

This movie gives black nerds what they want the same way that chick flicks cater to single women. Denzel Washington. A post-apocalyptic wasteland. Kung fu. Jennifer Beals. The Bible as prophecy. And Gary Oldman as the villain. All that's missing is music by The RZA. As they've shown since Menace 2 Society, The Hughes Brothers can competently make a film that moves well and smartly tells a story. My only complaint is a very silly twist ending. Still, recommended.

To sum this up The Book of Eli is Man on Fire meets Kung Fu meets Mad Max (and yes, that's a good thing). As an action film it does have some intense and impressive scenes. Though it's not deeply philosophical in the religion department it's not terribly heavy handed either given a realistic look at how the bible can be used and abused. As an action star Denzel brings a real acting quality that sets him above the run of the mill meat-head that can't act. I give this one a thumbs up.

Its chief sin is wasting Gary Oldman. It ends on such a monumental twist that I had to immediately rewatch it to see how they got through the whole movie without me knowing. Honestly, I can't believe the whole time Denzel Washington was actually Jaime Foxx!

There are literally more Bibles in the world than people so I have a hell of a time believing that there could could be only one to be found. Furthermore, even if you buy that, this movie's still a complete piece of shit that just keeps getting worse and worse right up to the twist at the end which is so hackneyed it might as well have been an episode of "The Scary Door."

An absolutely entertaining and original take on post-apocalyptia. Denzel never disappoints, but I really wish we saw more of Waits and McDowell--it was such a waste of talent. Satisfies my thirst for sci-fi and then some.

A strange animal. Despite the post-apocalyptic setting the film has virtually no sci-fi trappings; it's really a fairly typical Western with some religious undertones and grey visuals. I'm not sure I'll remember any of the characters or specific scenes a few months from now, but it's definitely not boring.

Despite a twist ending that's so ridiculous it was almost certainly put in as a last-minute afterthought, this manages to milk some new ideas out of the post-apocalyptic scenario that apparently began & ended w/ the Mad Max trilogy. Although the plot's central idea about the future of religion is laughable, there is a perfect metaphor 4 the power of words & a suprisingly impressive argument 4 religion at stake here. Some solid direction & more than capable actors w/ Denzel & Oldman as well.

Gorgeous post-apocalyptic imagery and the Atticus Ross score is incredible, but otherwise forgettable. Washington & Oldman are on autopilot, and nothing really interesting happens after the first shootout. Points deducted for presenting a future where there's only one bible, yet you can get your iPod recharged by Tom Waits and everyone looks like they stepped out of an Oakley ad. The ending is a joke.

I think this movie is heavily underrated, especially when comparing it to it's darker counterpart - The Road. I enjoyed the pace, the length, scenery and soundtrack. I think all this could have easily been done without Kunis character, but whatever, this is Hollywood. Plot twist completely surprised me, and in a good way, too. I think this is a very solid distopian sci-fi classic.

It's The Road for stupid people who get aroused just thinking about some good ol' religion. The premise really sounds like a moronic joke. [SPOILERS] "So, this blind guy with photographic memory that somehow is still alive in a post-apocalyptic world walks into a town carrying the last copy of the bible, and.." Just the idea of A BLIND MAN surviving and thriving in this setting is enough to make me angry. How simple do the makers think we are?

Post-apocalyptic chic. In metallic monochrome, in sterilizing shafts of light, in portentous slo-mo, Washington safeguards the only extant copy of the King James Bible, with his archer's bow, shotgun, pistol, and terrible swift sword: the new Messiah. One of many head-scratchers is why on earth the tin-pot town boss in the middle of the Southwest desert, lording it over a bunch of illiterate ruffians, wants to get his hands on the book, much less knows of its existence.

There is a diverse mix of good and bad in this movie. It's a satisfyingly original story with often fairly generic writing. It explores religion in a unique way, but I'm not sure in a relevant one. There is some good acting here and some not so good, some great actors, like Gary Oldman, were not served by their material. There is some damn good action, but the best of it is at the beginning of the film and it isn't a film about the action. Ultimately a good watch, but not memorable.

Starts out decent enough like a live-action Fallout 3, but as soon as Eli's book goes from faceless McGuffin to center for the movie's all-American "gimme that ol'time religion" deroute to preachy-hell, my patience with it ran out. It's simply too moronic, Old Testament, bloated and (worst of all) boring to enjoy on any higher level than aesthetically.

Only one copy of the Holy Bible left in the world? Cripes, isn't it like the most published book ever? I mean, think of how many the Gideons've tossed around. There are some decent ideas here, but it's all style over substance in the end. Despite how preposterous the whole thing is, it's entertaining enough to destract you from its shortcomings, at least 'til it's over. Makes me want to re-read A Canticle for Leibowitz for some good post-apocalyptic Bible-thumpin'.

Bad reviews, good movie. Surprisingly well-made visuals (one of the best fight scenes I've seen, great post-apocalyptic scenography) paired by equally good music. Denzel's acting is rock solid as always and Gary Oldman squashed his cliche bad guy role to the limits. I didn't know there was Ray Stevenson in the cast and I like him so that's a plus too. The only thing of somewhat poorer quality was the plot. It's not bad, mind you. But compared to the other parts it doesn't hold too well.

I used to fantasize about being all alone in the world when I was a kid; from the sheer number of the movies on this topic it seems like I wasn't alone. This movie might break a record for "cliches per minute", I mean I guessed literally every step. It is done very lazily, it is more like a sketch in a comic-book series. Add the post-apocalyptic evangelism and yeah I really enjoyed it! If I really try to come up with a subtext: Apple is evil, as everything happened due to an out of battery iPod

Pretty big fan here. From what people were saying on the net, I thought this would be at best an average affair. This went way beyond those expectations. Some things are silly, but the plot definitely isn't... and I saw a lot of people shitting on things elsewhere for no real reason. It has great action, a great script and above all else... fantastic imagery. It also helps that it's smarter than a typical action movie and blends western elements in with a post-apocalyptic world. Underrated.

It's 30 years in the future, a dilapidated post-apocalyptic hellscape of biblical proportions...but hey, things can't be that bad; Mila Kunis manages to scrounge up enough makeup/eyeliner to cake her face, and Denzel had the foresight to hoard 30 years rations of Crest Whitestrips. God is not dead.

While this film deserves to be stronger than it is, the Hughes Bros. deliver a gutsy, expensive mainstream movie. While it won't be the post-apocalyptic film to remember, it is a challenging and consistently entertaining film with the likes of Denzel Washington (in a refreshing out-there movie for him) and Gary Oldman (back to his smarmy evil best). The action delivers, and while the message of it is certainly obtuse, "The Book of Eli" is a daring offering considering its subject matter.

The Book Of Eli turned out to be one of the most underwhelming films of 2010. Initially it looked promising and even with the likes of Denzel Washington & Gary Oldman involved it surprisingly flopped. The post apocalyptic imagery is impressive and feels very Mad Max. And Denzel Washington's character is pretty cool. But plot wise it's completely nonsensical. It isn't engaging, the pacing is all over the place and the predictable ending thinks it's much better and clever than it actually is.

With an astonishingly weird premise that the film keeps from you as long as it can, most of this is like a mashup of Fallout 3 and The Road--except there's a clear villain in this picture. There are also so many goggles in this movie, you would think everyone was a skiing welder. Seriously, goggles, goggles, beatdown, goggles, ipod, goggles, secret water, goggles, beatdown, cat oil, goggles, goggles, rape, goggles, maiming, goggles, explosions, yelling, goggles...there, that's the movie.

I quite liked where this film seemed to be going at the start, but it very quickly went from intriguing, to crap, to abysmal. The dreary amoral post-apocalyptic world would be more at home in a cheap forgettable comic book or computer game. And the ending is just crap, leading up to a corny story of a blind man walking the road to matyrdom, guided by the hand of God, in order to preserve his word on Earth and defend it from the hands of evil men (who wouldn't be able to use it anyway). Yuck.

I liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would. Good action and an interesting plot. Plus Mila Kunis is smokin' hot. A few really annoying things kept it from being a great film though. Gary Oldman shoots Eli once in the stomach then they just leave him. If someone caused me that much trouble I would make damn sure that he was dead before I left. Also, I kind of think it's stupid that he's blind. It was an unnecessary twist. I could buy it if he wasn't 100% blind. Anyway, good not great.

Watchable action flick. That is until all that christianity crap really kicks in. It's funny how many similarities it has to Hillcoat's The Road. Beginning with stylistic choice of monochrome cinematography and ending with the ocean as the destination of a journey. But this is completely Hollywood product, and frankly I enjoyed action scenes most in this film. I am always game for an Afro-American Zatoichi. Last act is horrible, though.

While I usually love the post apocalyptic movies I found myself loving the action, scenery, actors, imagery and music, but absolutely hating the story and theme. Preachy religiousness entirely undermines the movie. By the time I got to the ending, I no longer cared. Such a waste of excellent talent, good music, special effects, imagery, and costumes. Someone did a fine job of trying to turn a bad script into a good movie, but in the end it was still a bad script.

Denzel is Christ in post-apocalyptic USA, wandering through Mad Max badlands to deliver a Bible to the west. Yeah it's as rubbish as you expect it to be, but the religious aspect is handled in a very even-handed way, and there's something about it that keeps you watching til the end. Oldman once again clearly stands out from the crowd, although his character - who attempts to retrieve a book by firing a rocket launcher at the bloke holding it - represents the stupidity this flick often displays.

Going into this movie I knew exactly what it was, what the book was, what the intentions of each character were. The one thing I knew for certain though, was that I would be entertained with two powerhouse performance and that did happen. The story made sense, the drama was good to a point, but once it hit that point it borderlined on far fetched. I was hoping for something a little different though, with the strong messages of good and evil they could have gone anywhere they wanted. Good film

An interesting premise that I felt pretty sure the filmmakers wouldn't do a whole lot with. However, I was pleasantly surprised that I ended up liking this for what it was--an action movie with a couple of good performances and an absolutely ludicrous plot twist that makes no sense. Washington has a nice gravtias on the screen that works well for the religious subject matter. I also liked that the opening several minutes were largely without dialogue, letting the pictures talk. I admire how low-key it decided to be, and refreshingly gritty and bleak. It has a patient and gradual sense of exposition that keeps us invested and the makings of a classically entertaining Hollywood good vs. evil plot, and balances its characters and concepts in a smartly self-contained and mercifully efficient manner. Thankfully, it never gets heavy-handed with the biblical elements, no characters devolve into ill-conceived cliches and the tone remains consistent.
