Oh my god. I am thankful I didn’t go see this in theaters, I would’ve gone insane from trying not to laugh. Gregg Hurwitz molesting a legal pad with this glorious nonsense.

The Book of Henry is a strong contender for the biggest mess of 2017. Each decision it makes feels wrong. Most of it makes no logical sense and it throws in so many unimportant details that feel like they should lead somewhere but never do. It's filled with contrivance and convenience--to the point that it's actively noticeable. It takes a whimsical approach to abuse and murder. It doesn't make any sense how a movie like this is even possible.

I still don't know what sort of genre-molesting-trope-fucking-narrative-insanity I just witnessed but it was the Best Worst fucking thing I'll have watched all year, mark my word and those of everyone else. Required viewing for its gobsmacking audacity & idiocy alone.

OK, there was a bit of cheese here and there, but the R/T highlighted comment characterizing it as having a deeply, maudlin twist is completely unfounded.

Sometimes a writer pens a bad script. Other times, a director struggles to translate what's on the page. Few films are like THE BOOK OF HENRY, which is as misguided and baffling in its conception as in its execution. A treacly story of a child genius and his plans to goad his mother into murder, it's the kind of movie that forces an exasperated Naomi Watts to exclaim "We're not going to kill the police commissioner!" to a perplexed Jacob Tremblay. Holy fucking shit.

It really is That Bad. Every decade or so comes a film so morally repugnant the world takes notice and careers die with the record scratch sound bite. Here, its not really because of a scene of Sarah Silverman kissing an underage boy, although that scene will resurface in my nightmares. It's that it worships psychological and perhaps physical pedophilia as a fairy tale redemption for adults. After a film like this, you take the creators' camera away and block their cell phone contacts.

Perfect example of a film that wants to be 5 films at once. Apparently this is the death knell on Colin Trevorrow's career.

It's not atrocious. The first half or so is a fairly decent drama with some emotional oomph, even if it's a little hokey. After that it becomes a weird murder movie that feels way too convenient because of Henry and his tape; boring and out of place. Certain elements are ignored, it gets a little silly, but there's no "maudlin twist" as RT states. I'm seeing a slightly different movie tonally then others, but I still don't think it's a good movie. Cut the second half and it may be okay.

This is genuinely one of the worst movies I have seen in the last few years. It is shockingly bad.

It's an ordinary movie with an extraordinary kid built in. Such is the disparity that even the characters in this movie don't look upon Henry in a realistic manner. The idea is unique, but it seems like Trevorrow assumed that once he had an interesting concept, that a good movie would just materialize, not so. It tries too hard to pull us in different directions to succeed at any one thing that it does. Except for Silverman, for the first time in my life, I have nothing bad to say about her.

Could have been a nice take on the genre. Isn't, 'cause it's so fucking stupid. Starts of somewhat decent, only to start and keep doing just about everything wrong mid-way. It seems to me like Trevorrow can't go beyond kitsch and clichés. No matter the subject. That's fine, as long as he sticks to things like Jurassic World. Dumb, bland, but fun. Which seems to be what he's good at. 'cause that short he did about a guy actually fucking his ex's mom for breaking up with him is pretty hilarious.

A tear-jerker... perhaps a bit mawkish and unrealistic, but emotional and funny. Quite similar to St. Vincent with the same lead child actor. It's a bit scary at times, but not all that scary. It contains a fair bit of cursing. But I think it is a kinda sweet movie for kids, although it also deals with death. A lot of good, funny moments.

It has so much promise and so much talent onscreen (the actors are fantastic playing unrealistically-written human beings) - but the story is so wrong on a level that it is hard to imagine any studio oversaw this production.

Watchable if you can ignore the mushyness, but I don't recommend it. It is full of scenes that build up some degree of suspense, only to disappoint the viewer in their conclusions. Especially the finale - if at least the finale had been decent, I could, however reluctantly, recommend this movie. But as it is, I have to advise not to waste your time.

So having a leather suit while you're carrying a gun is a law or something? Aside from many fails, obviously!! The movie has points but not so called "well-told"; but yeah i too think that the apathy is way more harmful and sadly growing fast. And what was that bothering emphasis on ingenuity of the child.

Lieberher and Tremblay are cinematic treasures of this decade, sadly wasted away here by an underdeveloped script and the completely void direction of Colin Trevorrow. Given a rewrite and a good director, this could've been a gem.

It's not so much that it's bad, though it is bad, but that you get the impression that everyone behind the scenes is convinced they are brilliant genius artists who have made a profound statement.

This movie has no idea what it wants to be. Is it a weepy feel-good family drama? A heist film? A dry, darkly comic satire? If it had stuck to one of these, it might have been decent, but it tries so hard to pull in different directions, that it became a fascinating mess of a film. Points for the filmmakers deciding just to go all out for it though, it might be bad, but it's definitely not boring.

this movie is bad, but it did give us great bad dialogue like "plywood is only slightly thicker than a human skull" and "violence is not the worse thing the world". It's concept and script are batshit insane.

PSI: 10?! 22% approval on RT?! This apparently is how to find great films nowadays. I suspected that going in, but didn't think it would be quite this good. WTF is wrong with people! This film is unbelievably well written. The story is compelling, profound, and creative. The cast is perfect, with two of the best child actors in the business. If you're completely dead inside, by all means, avoid this film, otherwise you're in for a treat. It is fiction, so you'll have to suspend some disbelief.

This is a film that takes a very strange turn and ultimately gets confused about what point it wants to make or the message it wants to convey. The turn is so drastic that it takes you out of the narrative and misses the opportunity to really say something. It's unfortunate because the set-up is fairly interesting, and has a decent cast.

The Book of Henry is painfully, grotesquely, and almost unbelievably terrible. The word pretentious can't even begin to describe the noxious stench which emanates from every frame of this wretched plague that some might call a motion picture. The people who made this should be committed to an institution to be kept away form the general public because no amount of therapy can possibly fix their impossibly broken psyches.
