Standard and forgettable film that certainly could've been better if it just found an angle to go with. Instead, it's tonally and thematically pulled apart from different directions and never hits home with any big satisfying punch. It's a nice moderate easy watch on a comfy subject matter, and although not every character is original, Emily does fine, the little girl is rather great, and Nighy is fantastic.

Emily Mortimer is adorable in this slow paced story of one woman's courage. Bill Nye was also charismatic with his overly reserved role. Patricia Clarkson effectively played a refined socialite with a villainous agenda. Worth watching but it lacked excitement, and I would have preferred a more satisfying ending.

Weather in England is bad. This film is bad. I don’t like modern British quasi-comedic dramas. I don’t like Bradbury. Bradbury is overrated.

"Books, books, I need my books. Have you re-read those books yet, by the way? You know the great thing? When you read ‘Moby Dick’ the second time, Ahab and the whale become good friends." Of course that's a line from Seinfeld, but it captures what I despise about the fetishisation of books, which is precisely what this film is about. However despite this, although I fully expected to hate this movie, Coixet does an admirable job of preventing it from dissolving into a preachy saccharine mess.

I love this movie. I love Emily Mortimer’s quirky but dignified performance as Florence, and of course I love Bill Nighy whose Edmund Brundish has all kinds of locks begging to be sprung. I imagine this is the film people are thinking of when they say they dislike British films (it’s Spanish, but whatever). For me, it’s a desperately needed scratch of my long-neglected Merchant-Ivory itch and I can’t wait to see it again.

Oh heck it was such a nice movie. Small bookshop in a cozy but maybe horrible town, what a dream.

A little too British for me, but definitely some enjoyable parts. Bill Nye is probably the best part. Pretty good.

The Bookshop is as depressing as it is monotonous. Clarkson is great as the insipid antagonist, a pillar of two-facedness and pseudo-righteous indignation, but is sorely under-used. Nighy steals every scene he is in. Mortimer plays her character well, though she breezes through without a lasting impression. The rest of the cast is a mixed bag, portraying English stereotypes to varying degrees of success (especially by the Spanish actors). A mediocre film that is less than the sum of its parts.

Hoplarlar.
