I liked in Kickboxer , Van Damme just kicked a palm tree a lot and danced drunk and did underwater punches to become strong enough to avenge his injured brother after a cheap shot during a kickboxing bout ... I don't get why he didn't just do this. Love putting on a horror film from different cultures, what makes them jump is different but if there's one thing that is universal its disgusting gross nonsense

Gets a bump for the imaginative sfx & use of religious practices in some kind of timeless, mystical war. Several plot elements grate my nerves, but there's a lot to get into here.

This rarity is as adept at making you laugh as it will make you cringe, and even transfix and hypnotize you, as if Jodorowsky were there in the editing the room when it was being made. An absolute odyssey, crossing space and time, battles waged not just in the kickboxing ring but in the very mind. Truly a one of a kind film. You have seen nothing like it, you will see nothing like it ever again.

Yet another in a long line of Black Magic movies made after the success of the film "Black Magic (1975)" itself from Shaw Brothers as is this one. This film doesn't make much sense and seems to concern it self more with crazy visuals. It is nice to see Bolo Yeung in a small part.

There is nothing that can adequately describe this insanity.

Bar the kickboxing scenes, there is little martial arts in this as the title suggests, but frankly most people's jaws will be on the floor and won't care. The good vs. evil plot refreshingly concentrates on its spirituality, melding it with surrealism, gleeful special effects, Jan Svankmajer (?!), and lots of goo. Its pure exploitation yet, despite its erratic pace, is deeply respectful of Buddhism while pulling out moments that you will never see in another film and will melt your brain.

The term insanity is being used inflationary these days, but this movie really earns the pedigree, starring a million maggots, taking it’s time to show the hardships of Buddhist black magic and puzzling anybody without a deep understanding of Buddhism. Also, the two female characters have two lines of dialogue and three nude scenes between them. But what happened to that morena the protagonist vomits up at the start?!?

I watched a lot of Asian films back in the day, but somehow I never got to exploitation films of Shaw Brothers. I should have. More happens in the first 15 minutes of this film than in 3 regular genre flicks put together. It's a genre mix-mash, but it's mostly fantasy with cool special effects. Cool and nasty. I have a strong stomach, but some scenes of this film made me loose appetite. There are lots of stuff I haven't even imagined before in this film, but the plot is repetitive.

It's ugly and lazy in most part, poorly crafted around a deep core of obsession for black magic. Those sequences are a must watch if you share this obsession.
