A very '80s family movie where Hollywood decided for the first (but definitely not last) time that autism = superpowers.

I watched this as a kid, a LOT. Now, I'm not sure why. Still, it's a decent enough family movie.

Sweet, Spielburgian fantasy. Often looks a bit much like an extended Afterschool Special but the marvelous cast (the female characters are especially well drawn and well acted) and good flying FX make this work. Incidentally, Castle got his show business start playing Michael Myers in the original _Halloween_. It's a funny business, isn't it?

Never saw this in the 80s, so catching it cold in 2017 leaves an undeniably sappy aftertaste. For all that, there are a few genuine feels and plenty of Last Starfighter shout-outery, from the kid brother's name (and game) to a side character named Mrs. Betuel. Without planning to, I watched this on Halloween. Checking trivia afterward, I then found out director Nick Castle played 'The Shape' in Carpenter's "Halloween". So it gets coincidence points for me.

Good natured fantasy film lacks sufficient dramatic impetus to be completely involving, and has a curiously sanitized feel to it; Fletcher's appearance evokes memories of another widely praised film which had similar difficulties reconciling the true nature of mental illness/trauma with the need to tell a dramatic story. Still it has a quiet charm, and Deakins, Underwood and Bedelia are fine; bizarre climax which quickly attempts a wrap up of multiple story threads is disorienting.

I dunno, I liked it. Nice low budget movie. A bit 80s campy, but you have to expect that from the era.

I adored this film when I was 15 and impressionable. The high score is because I remember it leaving me with a warm feeling all over. I'm not sure how I'd rate it if I saw it now, 20 years later, but still...

Pretty lame. I just remember it had a scene with a water pistol with piss in it which was the highlight of this sentimental melodramatic 80's movie.

Loved it when I was in primary school about 20 years ago. The brother, Lewis, and his lovely dog Max are my absolute favorite ♡
