What begins as a vibrant and harsh look at Afghan life for women descends into a harrow and heartbreaking tale highlighting family and the necessity of storytelling. The animation is gorgeous as it is allowed to change and morph as along with the protagonist.

Sensitive, realistic, sad, powerful and multiperspective story. Now I'm watching more animation films and I realized that I should have started earlier.

Quite heavy, but worth watching. Takes a difficult subjects and handles it marvellously.

What I most appreciated about this was the way it managed to show us both perspectives (male and female) of what it looks like to live in that world. The profound sense of injustice is palpable, while Twomey wisely keeps the proceedings pulled back enough to allow the power of the story and the characters to do their work on us.

In a medium too often reduced to being exclusively escapist, The Breadwinner delivers a devastatingly real story in a way that only animation could achieve.

Great looking animation with a potentially powerful story. Perhaps doesn't quite hit its full potential due to later story choices. The way war and violence is pushed to the forefront maybe undermines the potential subtlety of the character interactions. Worth a second look.

Less than the sum of it's parts. I wanted to see more of Sulayman, because his story hit a lot of the same notes as the studio's previous release, The Secret of Kells - particularly the stylized animation, and the folkloric tone. I also wanted to see more of the story of Parvana, because of the engaging story. Putting the two together, however, just didn't work for me. They didn't really connect in any meaningful way, and the stylistic and tonal shifts were detrimental to immersion.

A flower that blooms in the desert. Even in a place that could be called a hell on earth, people find strength, resilience and friendship. Such a gentle yet crude depiction of life in the Middle East under the most religiously fanatic regime. Every single person should see this.

It's well animated. More impressive is the feeling of dread the movie manages to impart. You might wonder in the beginning, why movie and the characters constantly surround themselves with fairytales. It'll be clear by the end.

A tragic true story of religion being hijacked by extremists gone mad. Islam was very peaceful, women had rights and life was good many years ago. No burkhas or anything of the sort. Then extremists came in and have basically hijacked the region turning it into an evil movement of oppression, murder and anger. Such primitive ideas are so wrong however widespread now across the middle east. This film captures the lawlessness and power struggle. Old men marrying children. Women beaten for walking

It's a very powerful film with a real and terrific story. Animation, music, the side story of Suleyman all was great. Characters are so clear and so powerful. Bu the ending is a bit dragging and lazy... Dİdnt comes with a conclusion or end.

Perhaps the most relevant animation film to be nominated for the cartoon Oscar in 2018. A little too serious for kids, a tiny bit dull for adults, but otherwise a noble effort on the scary monsters of Taliban and international gender politics. The coolest thing for me was those dreamy stories the girl kept trying to tell. Added some art to the suffering tale.

Sure, there's probably something to be said about an Irish studio filming a Canadian novel about life in Afghanistan. But despite some melodrama trappings it's got some brilliant character work, shifting animation styles to make a point, weaving in tons of little details that underscore everyday life under oppression, and giving even the villains enough depth; there are no leaders here, just people trapped to differing degrees kicking down.

Fascinating look at a different culture, unique animation. Not engaging enough, but I liked it. A tough watch that I may never revisit.

I stopped the film halfway through. It was too formulaic and predictable for me. That stopped me from being engaged. I'm not sure for who this film was made, to me it seemed tonally inconsistent.

Akin to a slightly softer-edged Timbuktu but no less devastating for it.

I totally get the appeal of telling a realistic story of oppression and sollitude, but this could have been way more powerful as just the fantasy story about the boy and the Elephant King. Cute animation, but formulaic and uneven format.

This adaptation of a popular YA novel from the co-director of "The Secret of Kells" takes a more straightforward approach to the material, but gains a lot of power from it's simple appeal to the viewer's sense of justice. A story that Pavana is telling her younger brother runs through the film, and that utilizes the more ornate animation style of "The Secret of Kells", but most of the animation is executed with a sort of abstract realism.
