I'd give it some credit for attempting to avoid genre cliches, but it seems to take the germs of these cliches (e.g. guys are messy, girls nag) and put them into situations that makes of these characters childish, irritating, and thoroughly unlikeable.

Hardly the gut-buster it was sold as. This is a rare thing: a romantic comedy that portrays relationships the way they actually exist in reality. It's honest, it's brutal, it's sometimes painfully heart-wrenching. But that's love. The Movies know not real love. This one does. Love is fun, a blessing, all that. But it's work. And sometimes, it sucks. So know what you're getting into before you sit down for this one. I didn't love the movie, but I sure as hell admired it. Great cast.

I can't lie, this movie struck a chord in that it displayed a breakup in as honest a was as you can get - an ignorant guy, an overbearing gal, and totally misread signals. The culmination was a totally believable situation which many can say they know all too well.

This movie is NOT - I repeat - NOT a romantic comedy, even though it is billed that way. It's closer in style to a Woody Allen sort of movie, a dramedy if you will, a great combination of dark with lighter moments. Yes, this movie had its funny moments, but the situation was so dark and real - I found it emotionally overwhelming.

A pleasant surprise, believe it or not. Vince Vaughn is just right - he's not over the top, not annoying, and not on a leash. It has real emotion when the characters get angry, sad, or even hopeful. Aniston and Vaughn have the chemistry to make this work, and it does. D'Onofrio is fantastic as the herky-jerky nervous brother, Favreau is great as the nutball (yet insightful) best friend. Just go see it.

Wow this is awful in everyway. The only thing that is redeeming is that they didn't go full stupid on the ending. But start to that point was so cliche-ridden and unbearable that I couldn't stop cringing. The blockbuster rom-com genre is garbage. These are two likable actors and by the first quarter I couldn't stand them.

Could've been better if it just flowed. It seemed kind of perforated. Jennifer Aniston did a good job of equaling out the behavioral elements in this film. Otherwise it'd be too much Vince Vaughn type of humor. Though I feel like Jennifer Aniston was kind of limited in this film.

Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston prove that they are not boring together on screen. I would call that an accomplishment. The winning quality of this film is in its honesty and its unconventional take on romantic comedy. Call it an anti-romantic comedy, but it is a decent comedy never-the-less.

I love Vince, and this was a geat idea, but it wasn't pulled off. Like Wedding Crashers, yet another Vince movie seems to be heading high, and then has a horrible 2nd half. At least Wedding Crashers had Owen Wilson to stem the flow somewhat.

I found this movie lacking after going in with such hope. I may have been tempted to rate it lower, but I figure I can't score it based on my expectations that were misplaced coming in. More juvenile than funny and I found it lacked a basis in reality that hurt it. Still, it was entertaining enough to be considered an average film.

Some moments are really uncomfortable to watch (especially if you're watching it with a significant other), but it's a decent movie overall. It's nothing groundbreaking. But it is an honest look at a breakup that doesn't necessarily end the way you would think.

Surprisingly austere blockbuster "comedy" that connects more on a lowkey dramatic level. Peyton Reed's framing and filmmaking techniques are surprisingly in touch with actors, though those at the periphery tend to suffer due to focus and inept performances.

Better moments notwithstanding, The Break-Up is not unlike the ever-escalating sourness of the relationship at the core of the film -- there's potential there for something special, and yet, the more they try to make things work out, the more disappointing things actually become.

While the ending isn't amazing or anything, it's truthful, and for Hollywood flicks like this it's a nice change. Jennifer Aniston gives a solid performance, Vince is okay, but not quite up to par. But is this really a comedy? It felt more like a drama... really threw me for a loop, much like a movie like The Weather Man did. So once I adapted to it and took it more as just a drama, I enjoyed it more than I thought. The writing, direction, cinematography... all of it is okay but not great.

I remember having a lot of fun watching it the first time. Aniston and Vaughn are surely a good rom-com couple. The second time around it was quite boring. Maybe it is boring, or maybe it's entertaining but just not one of those movies of When Harry Met Sally caliber.

A film that cannot decide what it wants to be. Half of this movie is standard rom-com territory, while the second half is like a different movie, as the film stiffens its upper lip and attempts (poorly) to become a much more serious & emotive drama. This simply doesn't work, and although the movie does okay(ish) as a comedy, when it attempts the serious stuff later on it just seems insincere and forced; particularly as the modicum of comedic charm has dried up. The ending is awful also.

It helps if you like Aniston and Vaughn. Neither of them are really reaching very far from the characters they normally play but their chemistry is decent. It feels like a realistic view of a break-up in some parts and totally ridiculous in others. I'll give it credit for not having a completely sell-out ending while still not making it a depressing ending.

Vaughn is his usual childish moronic self but, much like the tired story arc, it works out to the film's advantage. Both the comedy and drama aspects are reasonably successful and the leads are surprisingly effective. If all this didn't take place in the fantasy land of kooky friends and Hollywood jobs and the direction were anything above mediocre the film could actually be above average.

A much more realistic look at relationships than we often get in a Hollywood rom-com. It's barely even a comedy though. And the drama isn't as effective as it wants to. But, the honesty is refreshing enough to make the movie work and it's worth a viewing. I highly recommend against watching this as a "date" movie if your relationship is going through any difficulties at all. (Also, Jennifer Anniston's ass)

Typical romantic comedy, except less comedy and more drama. Really the only funny moment was with Jon Favreau near the end. It was a bit darker then other Jennifer Aniston movies, but that didn't exactly make it better. It's still generic through and through. It tries to take itself seriously sometimes, but then it does some ridiculous "comedic" things at others. Also it's kind of annoying they had to stick on that Hollywood feel good ending.

The movie is about a couple who breaks up, and all the fighting that ensues. If I wanted to be in the middle of such back-and-forth yelling and arguing, I'd pick a fight with my boyfriend or become a marriage counselor. I've never felt so uncomfortable watching a movie about relationships.

Maybe I'm a sentimental person, but a rom-com that isn't a godawful happy-ending rom-com and instead is a more troubling we-broke-up-so-now-will-have-arguments-on-screen-for-60+-minutes is somewhat more palatable than the former... albeit slightly disturbing when you have a girlfriend sitting nearby, especially a long term one, who is sick of doing dishes, and stuff.

If you enjoy a generic comedy where Vince Vaughn yells a lot and Jennifer Aniston looks good this may the perfect movie for you. I like more substance to films than Vaughn displaying teenage level angst and child like behaviour. Aniston is like watching paint dry. Its cool to see how it looks when it is all done up but can we just skip to the end through a photo montage? This movie is dull, flat and boring compared to films of the same nature.

Witless, pointless roll around in the muck of a nightmare relationship is at least an equal opportunity offender – while Aniston and Vaughn bring their A-game, they are each saddled with characters who are abrasively unlikable from the first frame, further hampered by a screenplay which never gives the viewer an earthly reason to be interested or invested in their toxic, passive aggressive games. A waste of a terrific supporting cast to boot, all reduced to stooges for the central ugliness.
