A flawed MGM production, but it's star power and the awkward looks draws one in regardless. There is a lot about this that's ridiculous, perplexing and overly melodramatic. The whole story relies in blindly believing that love will conquer total cruelty. In the way they play it out, they make Joan Crawford into the bad girl. Giving her a laughable look and almost a psychopathic behavior. It's one of those movies where you really believe that the studio is trying to ruin her career.

Viewed April 6, 2022. Like the similarly creaky Christopher Strong, The Bride Wore Red toys with some interesting ideas about female agency and power, but only in dull cinematic terms. It's perhaps the most literal love triangle ever conceived, Joan Crawford torn between comfortable wealth and true love as portrayed by Robert Young and Franchot Tone. There are some nice understated moments of acting between Crawford and Tone, but that's about it.
