Not as bad as everyone says. Not great, but is quirky enough to make it enjoyable. My biggest problem with the movie: why in the hell do people in the middle of Germany speak with British accents? The French in this movie speak with French accents, why can't the Germans speak with German accents?

Fairly nice film to look at, although it could be said that some of the special effects were slightly off. It's a nice little adventure, with the theme that sometimes reality is more frightful than the fairy tales that we make up. It's your typical mainstream affair, but Gilliam's unique touch is still all over it and I think that alone makes it interesting and worth at least a look.

Could have been brilliant, but Gilliam's stylistic excesses, coupled with what feels like a lot of studio interference, results in a bizarre, unpleasant mess that looks interesting but feels disjointed and incoherent. An unfortunate missed opportunity, as this material had great potential.

One of the worst Gilliam movies I've seen. And still...pretty good. Not a Hall of Fame, but worth seeing. With one drawback - Nobody, even Gilliam, should make spectacular movies when they haven't got enough money to do the tricks properly. For example, the wolf (when animated) moved like chinese toy robot.

Reviewing: The stunning visuals are pure Gilliam. I like his strong imagination, but the effects are not always successful (specially the CG ones). It was shame that the story was so poor. The characters were also badly created.

I gave this movie 10 points for being directed by Terry Gilliam, 5 points for having Peter Stormare in it, and another 5 for having Jonathan Pryce as well. Had none of those individuals been involved, the movie's score would be in the single digits.

How could Gilliam fail so badly? It's actually not that bad, it has some fun moments and the visuals are fine, not good but acceptable, but the story just doesn't work and it feels like there are chunks missing all over the place.

I'm surprised by all of the harsh criticisms directed at this picture. I've watched it multiple times and wholly enjoyed every viewing. Granted it's not Gilliam's best by a long margin, but even his worst is better than 99.99999 % of everything surrounding it. Would yo rather watch Chris Columbus's god-awful film of HARRY POTTER? A lovely mash-up of classic children's lit filled with great visuals. Ledger and Pryce are outstanding.

Maybe it's the lowered expectations, but I had a better time at this than I thought I would, and Heath Ledger here actually impressed me more than he did in Brokeback Mountain. Matt Damon isn't really a Terry Gilliam actor, though he gives a game effort. And for the record, I couldn't understand a single thing Peter Stormare said the entire picture. The theme of navigating reality through fantasy obviously holds great meaning to Gilliam, but it's expressed clumsily here.

I fount it hard to judge it: is it a kid's movie or an adult's movie? If it's a kid's movie, it can be fascinating and creepy, showing the dark side of fairy tale and troubled times of past occupation from invading forces, the comic relief being funny and not too obnoxious. If it's an adult movie, then it is a bit disappointing with an uneven plot and ugly unexplained CGI, a tad too silly at times in spite of the strong cast.

Suffers from many problems, ranging from the below-par performances, the clumsy script and it's often even clumsier delivery, as well as special effects which look like they've been cobbled together at the last minute on Windows 95. Even if this one of Gilliam rare fuck-ups, it's never quite hate-worthy. The awful special effects become strangely charming towards the end, and Gilliam's natural ability to tell a story does save this movie to at least some degree.

I expected it to be an ordinary fairytale, but it's more than that, it's more complete than that. That's the good part, it's a film that has many things in it: action, humour, tension, .. The bad part is that all the other things weren't good. This sure isn't a film for children, but I don't know if adults will like it either..

The film's ever-changing nature of tone does not do what it is supposed to. It disconnects the already disconnected audience further from it. It fails in trying to keep the audience entertained. You care more for the actors than the characters they are portraying. You care more for the scenery than the plot within it, and most importantly, you care more about the time on your watch than anything happening on the screen.

This is not the best movie directed by Terry Gilliam but it is still a lot of fun. There are numerous references to fairly tales but they are changed in a refreshing way. The script is original and full of interesting ideas. There are a few slow spots but they are outweighed by the fun scenes. Overall I recommend this interesting twist on fairy tales.

The post-modernist script is an uninspired bricolage of elements from "The Tales," but the art direction is fine: fun to look at and thematically interesting. Set in occupied Thuringia during the Napoleonic wars, the film implies the triumph of German Romanticism over the French Enlightenment by starting with images suggestive of Hoffman and Fuseli and ending with the awakening of a Pre-Raphaelite Sleeping Beauty. (Acting note: Ledger is so good that Damon disappears beside him.)

Imaginative and very visual. That is the standard for a Terry Gilliam movie, but this one stands alone. It very nicely blends several familiar fairy tales to create a story that is still very much its own. Though if you are not a fan of weird imagery, this one is not for you.

One of Gilliam's swings-and-a-miss, but a creatively designed one and enthusiastically performed by its cast, it's just a shame that the story itself is such a muddle, with the "Grimm Fairy Tale" motif inconsistently utilised (a SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE variant would have been interesting). Some bright moments make it less than a chore to sit through, with Bellucci's ultimate fate a beautifully conceived and amusing one.

Tries to mix comedy and action and doesn't really succeed at either. Ledger and Damon are too bland in the leading roles, although neither are helped by a truly anaemic screenplay that goes nowhere of any interest, has cringe-worthy dialogue, and leaves huge holes in the plot. The sets and the costumes look nice, but it's nothing you haven't seen in other fantasy films (it reminded me a lot of Sleepy Hollow), and the CGI sticks out like a sore thumb. A bit of an all-round dud.
