While a moving story about a man caught between two sides in the political struggles at a cotton field, the movie lacks a lot in the acting department in leading man Richard Barthelmess who is just too wooden here. His style of acting can work sometimes, but not here. He looks so out of place! He holds the movie back big time while all the other character actors does their best and create some atmosphere. Not even a stunning Bette Davis managed to bring much out of him here.

More interesting than good, this is a racially whitewashed version of tenant farming in the American south in the early 20th century. It does show how tenant farming or share cropping had basically become involuntary servitude or debt bondage.

While it's hard to imagine Curtiz making an outright bad film, this comes perilously close largely due to Barthelmess' dull and stagy performance and his complete lack of chemistry with Davis. Davis is great despite the fact that Curtiz did not hide the fact that he didn't want her in the film. She almost looks like a completely different person with her hair bleached blonde, but she's kind of the one ray of light in this one.

Someone at Warner's (Darryl Zanuck) finally figured out what to do with Bette Davis: cast her as a spitfire. This is the first role she ever got that truly suited her, and she plays it with intensity to burn. One wishes there were more of her here to watch. Barthelmess makes a rather odd hearthrob, but he's serviceable as a boy that tries to please everyone. Berton Churchill does some very good work as a very unlikable character.
