Definitely better than Dmytryk's more extensive 1954 adaptation of the novel, and arguably a bit weaker than Friedkin's 2023 version (which follows Altman's wise lead in focusing only on the trial, but is overall better-executed). Bogosian and Gallagher as the lawyers are a bit lukewarm. Altman's naturalistic approach to dialogue nevertheless lends itself well to the nuanced text, and some unique lines in the final scene make Altman's ending the easiest to understand.
