The Cakemaker

Low-key, unpredictable drama whose meditations on grief and loss (embodied in a pair of terrific performances from Kalkhof and Adler) are beautifully and poignantly handled, even as the actions of the characters take the film down some enigmatic pathways. It's perhaps a little more disappointingly superficial when it shifts to German and Israeli race relations, a story thread the film doesn't seem to have the heart to properly follow, but the love stor(ies) at its heart are quite devastating.

The unarticulated desires and intentions of The Cakemaker give the film great momentum. Graizer gives the audience a lot of room for interpretation without seeming lazy. However, I can definitely see how someone would find this film weak and unappealing. It tows the line.
