Here is a surprisingly serviceable thriller that had me in its grip until its questionable final minutes. A solid viewing experience overall, suspenseful, and a quick 90 minutes.

It's a shame this movie descends into idiocy in its final act, because until then it was a pretty fun "Buried in a car trunk" thriller, and frankly, after the CGI monstrosities of Jack the Giant Slayer and Oz the Great and Powerful, I was just happy to be watching something without special effects and set in the real world. But still, the final twenty minutes or so... pretty freakin' dumb.

Far better than expected. Some of the scenes were genuinely creepy and some quite dark which was a nice surprise. Felt a bit wanting at the end but it did just enough.

WWE Present's The Call - 50 minutes in the movie suddenly goes off the rails and turns into Silence of the Lambs x Saw. And that's the bottom line because STONE COLD SAID SO GIMMMME A HELL YEAH

The first 2/3 of this film are actually really good. It gets so ludicrous in the final act, though, culminating in a seriously ridiculous ending scene.

Boring, shallow, and dry, The Call was boring, shallow, and dry. There is no valid attempt at engaging the audience, and the movie dwells in cheap scares as opposed to the actual manifestation of tension. I didn't like The Call at all.

Seriously, guys: this movie is paced like a frigging gunshot. Breakneck. I mean, it goes where we expect it to go and takes the route we expect it to take getting there, but damn. Exciting, gripping, crackerjack stuff. And Breslin should be commended for skillfully, convincingly simulating hysterical terror for 90 entire minutes.

This movie was pretty decent. I thought that the scenes where Halle Berry was talking Abigail Breslin through how to get out of the car trunk was neat because they are actual tactics that you must do like kicking the tail light out and waving you arm through the hole you create. I also thought the movie was pretty predictable except for the ending, it wasn't an incredible twist but it was satisfying. I liked Breslin in this, it's interesting to see her in a more adult role.

The first hour or so is tense, hectic and, dare I say, gripping - not entirely unlike the reenactments on that old William Shatner-helmed tv-show, "Rescue 911". Halle Berry is oddly tolerable and the pacing is breadneck. Unfortunately things move from hardly believable to utterly ridiculous in the final half an hour, cultimating in the most bonkers "gotcha!" ending for some time.

There is no way the final half hour was written by the same people who wrote the first hour. First 60 minutes is so clever, action packed and fun, but the last 30 minutes is cliched, stupid and ludicrous.

As others have said, the first 45 minutes to an hour was tolerable and somewhat captivating. Then the movie spiraled out of control quickly after until it completely exploded by the end and became utterly stupid. Wow.

Continuously and ferociously tense and exciting, this taut, spare thriller has an emotional nuance that makes it almost insufferably engrossing, like much of Brad Anderson's work, except that this one was not meant to have the intelligence or maturity of a Session 9 or Transsiberian, and takes a rather foolish turn in the third act that cops out into implausible triviality.

Starts out really strong, with good performances from Halle Berry & Abigail Breslin. Unfortunately, the whole thing falls apart in the last third, where Berry's character takes a huge 180 and her actions stop making any sense.

This is a tense thriller. Halle Berry was great and the young Abigail Breslin was terrific. The story is fairly basic and the part of the bad guy was woefully underdeveloped and somewhat lame. Excellent music and film quality. Good dialog. The drama of finding the kidnapped girl was very exciting. Unfortunately, the ending, although somewhat satisfying, did not feel credible in the slightest. Worth watching but not without flaws.

This is actually a lot better than I think it gets credit for. I think it provides a unique synopsis and message for these kind of scenarios, as it's something if executed well, could be really good. Unfortunately, it's pretty by-the-books as they come, with a slight little twist/nod that I thought was interesting, but at the same time doesn't really fit the narrative of the film. It's a fine thriller, and Halle Berry does pretty well all things considered, it's just very odd.

Interesting take on urban chaos by almost the same rules and visual hints that made some recent thrillers, from the good Tony Scott's Taking of Pelham to last year's Compliance. Anderson's digital close-ups are effective, but the film relies mostly on editing tricks -- like creating fake slowmo moves before releasing explosions of rage -- to generate tension. Not as bad as they say, but this could've been a nice exploitation (women in prison meets revenge) thriller.

Seemed to be building into a solid thriller, but goes off the rails in the end. With the ludicrous final moments, Halle Berry slammed the door on any chance of a passing score.

Intense, exciting and occasionally frustrating, in that gripping-the-edge-of-your-seat way. A brilliantly intense first hour, a decent follow-up half-hour, and a ridiculous final thirty seconds that you'd do well to skip over.

Considering it's a tired old idea (cop dishes out advice to lost, trapped kidnapping victim), drawn out to a full film, Anderson does admirably in keeping The Call feel fresh and thrilling... for the first hour anyway, before the proverbial wheels come hurtling off. The 911 operator unfathomably decides to follow up the investigation alone, and we get a mega-stupid, cliché-ridden finale to see out the story. Leaves you banging your head against the wall and loses a star for the film overall.

It seems director Brad Anderson was in top form when he directed The Machinist, Session 9, and Transsiberian. He was going to be my new go-to director, but lately he's been pumping out contrived star vehicles that quickly disappoint (see Stonehearst Asylum). I managed to sit this entire one out, but that's because it's on Netflix and I was too tired to browse other titles.

I don't think it's great by any means, there was a ton of contrast with a scene going from good to just horrid but honestly altogether I found it entertaining and it kept my interest. The ending was a little ridiculous, and some of the writing was especially bad but I mean, this is one of those movies where if you're bored on a Friday night and can't think of anything else to watch then by all means go for it.

I think this story was built pretty good. Acting was good, I liked Halle Berrey, pacing was great, camerawork... There wasn't a thing I didn't like and even the plot was basic but straightforward. And then there were the last 20 minutes where the film went from an exciting kidnapping over some want to be Hitchock's Psycho till eventually this rubbish revenge ending which really doesn't fit either one of the characters.

This is what Hollywood needs more of: women lead action movies with quality Lifetime channel melodrama. Halle Berry elevates the premise, as even in scenes of just talking on the telephone she continually raises the picture's tension. The small look of the movie is nice (and, at times, up there with Panic Room) although the music video camera angles can become obnoxious. I'm unsure if it nails the ending, but that's a minor complaint as it gives the people what they're looking for. Recommended.

The movie starts off well and it has some really good and exciting scenes during over half of the running time. Unfortunately the movie gets derailed when the main character leaves her work place. The movie then gets ridicules at that point. Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin both give good performances in this movie. The weak script in the final act is the downfall of this thriller.

A good cast saves the movie from complete failure. The cinematography is also memorizing, rife with homages to classic horror. If only the script wasn't full of plot-holes and the soundtrack not filled with dubstep bass drops, you'd have a pretty good movie.

This thriller about a 9/11 call is effectively crafted with constant edge-of-your-seat moments, but it then takes a turn for the weird and becomes a manipulative schlocky horror film in its third act. The villain slowly evolves into a one-dimensional weirdo ripped out of a Hannibal Lecter story, and the film's shift in tone in the final 30 minutes feels completely out of place. Yet, it still works as a creepy thrill ride.

Great atmosphere, great pacing, great direction, great acting...horrible, intolerable just-about-everything-else. Such a frustrating contrast between the film being in such capable hands, and yet from beginning to end, it's a string of unbelievably inept decisions by the characters. Watchable, but could have been so much more.

A pretty successful thriller that keeps you at the edge of your seat during watching. Pretty well directed and Halle Berry's and Abigail Breslin's acting take the movie to another level. Sometimes the kidnapper's issues slightly reminded me of Buffalo Bill of Silence of the Lambs.

Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin do a great job in this film, allowing for the tense moments to build. However, the absurd and abrupt ending cancels all that. It was highly unnecessary. Up until the end this film was all about the emotional struggle of the two main characters and then all of a sudden it took a turn that was straight out of left field and totally uncalled for. It is still an entertaining flick for the first half. Enjoy it for what it is.

It's a shame to see two good performances go to waste, plus that's yet another good set-up flushed down the toilet (ok this one does hold up for an hour, but I swear this is a trend). Clearly pitches to Hollywood big wigs don't involve endings.

Third act ruins it when the kidnapper and dispatcher, who were pretty smart, suddenly lose tons of IQ points. (SPOILERS COMING) Kidnapper sees the call's gone on over an hour, doesn't change locations? Dispatcher goes to investigate, brings a flashlight? No weapon? And the flashlight serves to announce she's there- with no weapon? C'mon.

Kind of a great idea for a thriller, completely vitiated by its inept execution. The idiotic slowness of the cops is never adequately explained, and it features some of the stupidest victims on the planet. Still, there are some good, taut moments, but not nearly enough of them. The ending could have been an exhilarating, kinky finis to a... you know... actually GOOD thriller.

There is a pretty decent thriller hidden in this somewhere. Because the second act is suspenseful in a realistic way with the 911 operator and kidnapped girl together trying to figure out her location. Unfortunate the first act is very standard and the movie goes completely off rails in the 3rd act with a ridiculous misplaced revenge porn ending.
