In the 1600s, cowardly Sir Simon of Canterville flees a duel and seeks solace in the family castle. His ashamed father seals him in the room where he is hiding and dooms him to life as a ghost until one of his descendants performs a brave deed. Simon believes he may be saved when he meets Cuffy Williams, an American kinsman stationed with a troop of soldiers at the castle in 1943. Will this blood relative save the family honor, or will his blood be as yellow as the rest of the Cantervilles? (imdb)

Quite similar to the recent Casper movie in many ways and much better.

A comedic ghost story that isn't sure how "serious" it wants to play. At times, it's a little more intellectual, and then at other times it comes close to slapstick (the ending jeep scene was particularly awful). Perhaps that's mirrored by the stars, with a wiser-than-her-years O'Brien playing the straight part while Laughton chomps up the scenery. It's not a classic, but a nice little diversion; I got a few laughs out of it.

Charles Laughton the cowardly ghost! An admirable family ghost story, with the sweetest little girl in the middle of things. Margaret O'Brien took this picture and made it hers. Not often Laughton could be swept to the side like that, but her strength made the picture better and was needed to give Robert Young's character the proper support from the seemingly inherited family cowardice. Good fun!
