Disappointing western-tinged noir. The movie plods and plods, especially during the tedious second act, and doesn't pick up until the end. Noir is often about making the wrong choices, but Ayres just seems to make one bone-headed decision after another. Wright's character is equally puzzling. The whole thing just doesn't work. Some potentially interesting psychological angles arise, but they're handled poorly. The score is also a dud. A few good moments aside, nothing much to see here.

Decent noir, but not without a few serious flaws. The circular nature of the narrative is pretty interesting, and the first two-thirds are nicely done as Ayres struggles with his guilty conscience. But the ending goes into some seriously dumb territory with characters doing things that make very little sense.

They built an entire movie around putting up your hands to surrender, and the plot, while silly, still finds a way to go off the rails.

Attempt at a Western Noir with Lew Ayres and it's mostly a miss. Does hit some atmosphere at sporadic portions of the film, but for the most part it just feels like a super cheap and aimless experiment.
