The Castle

1997
Comedy

A Melbourne family is very happy living where they do, near the Melbourne airport (according to Jane Kennedy, it's "practically their back yard"). However, they are forced to leave their beloved home, by the Government and airport authorities. 'The Castle' is the story of how they fight to remain in their house, taking their case as far as the High Court.

A perfectly pitched celebration of the Australian underdog culture

I feel rather torn on how middle-class Australians are portrayed in this film, but I suppose there's enough laughs and larrikins to ensure this is a harmless flick (but the Australian stereotype in this film is now mostly outdated).

Great movie! Great "message." It's a bit different, but it's still very inspiring.:) It's about "the little guy" standing up for what's right. When the Kerrigan family receives notice that they are being kicked out of their homes (so the airport can expand), Mr. Kerrigan takes matters into his own hands, intending to use the Australian Constitutional Law to back him up. Funny, sweet and smart, it's a great movie! (though, a warning that there's much use of the "F" word).

Gentle humour, wonderfully observed with some truly funny scenes. 'Well thats going straight to the snooker room' - watch it and you will be using the same phrase yourself!

One of my favourite Australian movies. Everything in this is spot on and it's easily one of the most quotable movies going. I'm not sure if other nationalities get our humour but I love it!

Witty, entertaining, clever and held together by a solid story and a pretty good cast.

Full of heart as well as many satisfying and endlessly quotable lines. Likely that you need to have lived in Australia to really 'get' this film (in particular the humour).

If you liked Napoleon Dynamite you might just like this. Awkward humor is the name of the game here. Dry wit and sarcastic cracks. Loved it.

It's easy to see why The Castle resonated so greatly with Australians: it reinforces many of their salient cultural myths. The Kerrigan's represent the old values of humility and being content with your lot, values which were already eroding by 1997 and bear little resemblance to the neo-liberal landscape of today where aspirations rule and home ownership remains a distant dream. Caton nails his character, but the film's greatest virtues (i.e. as a cultural artifact) were mostly unintended.

A warm and gentle comedy which very quickly becomes one of the nicest films (with one of the nicest families) you'll ever watch. The humour is dry and understated, and overall the film is a great underdog tale - taking the piss out of upper-class attitudes to the lower classes, although likely a little out of date now. Just a very nice film. Although it is lacking in pacing - the main thrust of the film happens in about 20 minutes before the end. Also not enough Wayne Hope.

Nice pacing, maybe needed a bit more to it, but overall good. If I were to nitpick and look too deeply into it, the moral really is, if you don't have the incredible luck of getting an excellent barrister drop from the sky and take your case, then you're fucked. But just as a movie, it was entertaining.

Charming and sometimes cute. It didn't make me laugh actually, sometimes a few light chuckles, but that's ok
