The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
With their dour, bookish cousin Eustace (Will Poulter) in tow, the youngest Pevensie offspring -- Lucy (Georgie Henley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes) -- take an unexpected trip back to Narnia and join noble King Caspian (Ben Barnes) for an epic high-seas adventure. Setting sail aboard the Dawn Treader, the young heroes head for the end of the world, determined to rescue seven once-powerful lords banished by Caspian's evil uncle.

About as good as the first two, if a touch more lightweight and forgettable (though that was true of the book, too).

There are scenes here that look alarmingly cheaply made, like too many actors are crammed on too small a soundstage for what's supposed to be an exterior shot. Still, the story here is strong, and that overcomes most of the shortcomings in production value. There is one scene of extraordinary sincerity and sensitivity, when Reepicheep quietly extends a kindness to the obnoxious Eustace. I wept like a child, and this scene sold me on the rest of the film.

The series manages to redeem itself after the trifling effort of "Prince Caspian". My thoughts on "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" are pretty much identical to "Lion", the religious overtones are still as subtle as a brick to the face but the world on show here is so engaging and enthralling that you can't help but be charmed and mystified by the whole thing. Liam Neeson still makes for a good Christ-lion.

Entertaining enough, but none of the sequels have even come close to capturing the magic of the first entry in the series.

Dawn Treader found the fun. For two hours, I was engrossed in a land I loved as a child and still love today. I was called into a magical world and I once again felt Aslan tugging at my heart. He wasn't in my backyard, but it was the next best thing. (pluggedin.com)

I thought it was pretty much on par with the previous entries. The cousin is played by Will Poulter, who I'd seen before in Son of Rambow (2007), and I found him to be the best of the young actors in this film. I was impressed with some of the visual effects and I liked the fantastical creatures involved. The pacing bothered me a little sometimes, but overall, I enjoyed it.

Good thing I was forewarned that this movie varied greatly from the book. It allowed me to rate it on its own merit. Still had some of my favorite parts from the book. Awesome story either way with good action, drama, comedy, and moral lessons.

One thing about the Narnia series is its consistency. Neither good nor bad, it is a good way to spend 2 hours during the weekend when it is in 3D. I think this one was slightly better than its predecessors. I liked the design of the sea monster in particular.

"For Adventure!" wasn't good enough, so the filmmakers cried, "For a MacGuffin!" instead, and really that's the worst of the film (alongside the awfully designed dragon): the green mist is a boring device and a crippling blow to the source material. But everything else is the best of the series so far. The direction is energetic, the action rollicking, the comedy (Poulter is superb as Eustace) on point, the scenery and design strong. Honestly, it's better than you remember.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the worst of the first three Narnia adaptations. It's dull, despite being a half-hour shorter than each of the other two installments, it's shallow, and its overt take on the religious subtext of the books has finally become distracting; you can't willfully ignore it this time around. The film has a few good elements but on the whole isn't worth the time unless you're someone who feels obligated to watch all the films in a series.

Far and away the best of this series takes a page from noughty-era fantasy films (PIRATES, POTTER even LOTR), but crafts its own fun and enjoyable adventure; lighter on its feet than previous entries and helped by the young cast who seem more comfortable and confident in their performances (especially ring-in Poulter, whose Eustace is a scene-stealing riot). Wraps up with a fair degree of poignancy, though the religious undertones become perhaps a little too explicitly pious overtones.

Surprisingly dull, and unsurprisingly heavy-handed. It has no driving force in its plot, the characters are either underdeveloped, uninteresting or annoying, and even the supposedly exciting battles have little energy. It's not quite bad but it's totally forgettable and uninspired.

The movie was all right, not as exciting or impressive as the other two. And I always have a chip on my shoulder about Aslan, who only seems to help if someone believes in him, giving no rhyme or reason to why he lets the bad things happen in the first place. I can handle it as allegory. But at the end of this thing, Aslan pretty much spells out that the children need to find him 'by another name' in the other world. And Reepicheep apparently commits allegorical suicide. Ending ruins it, totally

I liked this movie more than I should have. I'm a fan of the Narnia books, and I'm a fan of fantasy, and this is the sort of movie I would have loved as a kid. No, it's not a great film, but it looked, visually, very good, and it made me feel like a kid again. I like that, at least.

Cartoonish and dramatically inert. I couldn't give a shit about any of the characters. I was no huge fan of the first two Narnias but this is nevertheless easily the worst yet.

Worst of the films so far, but not completely terrible. The book was one moral tale after another and they're all in here in some form, but mangled somewhat. I didn't really take away the same messages from the movie as I did from the book. There's also some pointless additions which turn the book's voyage for the sake of adventure into some half-baked plot about a smoke monster. Overall, not that hot.

The type of film that's so forgettable that you don't really care how you score it so long as it's not in the greens. Then every time you go through and re-score your films later this is the one that jumps up and down dramatically between tiers, bumping uglies with Police Academy: Mission to Moscow one day and School of Rock the next. Just another drearily uninspired and ham-handed 3D "adventure" to help fill the ranks of films you need to rate on Criticker to remember that you've seen.

Purists will be very upset because this film chops up and bastardizes the original story more than all the other Disney adaptations. Worst it adds many corny elements to the film, and brings in a new actor who is amazingly even worse than the others! That said: I enjoyed the film. It has impressive panoramic shots/visual effects, and it is in 3D (it doesn't come out of the screen, but it's still something.) And to their credit Georgie Henley and Ben Barnes have really grown into their roles!

Its leisurely, businesslike pace won't win the franchise many new fans, but Voyage of the Dawn Treader restores some of the Narnia franchise's lost luster with strong performances and impressive special effects.

Maybe I've outgrown the books, but I remember liking this book. This film was like a weaker Odyssey with annoying children. Eustace was Useless. Their great act of freeing the city from slavers is pointless since they left right away. Religious undertones in the series become overtones but Aslan is likeable. Cool costumes on everyone. Very predictable scenes including Eustace accidentally knocking a guy into the water by swinging a paddle. Fav scene: Eustace fight w/Reepicheep.

Is it possible that the makers of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader have made the best film in the series to date while while charting a course even further from the book? I think it is. Perhaps it's even because the film diverges from the book to the extent that it does that I'm able to regard the film more for what it is than for what it isn't.

Brings back some of the magic of the first movie that Prince Caspian was lacking, though the stripped down budget really shows (only $155 million, where did it all go?). All the descendants of the shipwrecked Spanish ship are British or Americans now, because magic touch of Aslan?

Far inferior to the previous two, and hell even worse than the BBC versions, this is mostly due to the story being mishandled, watered down, and simply not nurtured enough as a movie. I blame the majority of the unlikeability here on Poulter's unnatural penchant for making me want to kill things--especially him.

The source material is completely suited for the screen. Instead of sticking to the script, however, we get a whole lot of cheesy changes, including this gimicky green mist. The performances are good, but feels much more like a flop than the last one. It's a shame, because we'll now never get a film version of The Horse and His Boy.

This third installment takes the same turn downwards as the books did. It started out well with tLtWatW, went down a little with faggy Prins Caspian and now we are stuck with only the two annoying kids left and a not at all magical story. The special effects are crappy, the mise-en-scene often dreadfully unprofessional and the Dawn Treader reminds me of one those small boats you sit with in the bathtub! Oh yeah and if you didnt already know who Aslan really is now you definately will! OMG!

In this 3rd film in the series, the heroes travel the seas of Narnia to confront an evil and powerful enemy. The story is interesting and the images are amazing, but the characters seem superficial. The content of the narrative tends to be limited to what the words say and rarely goes deep enough to actually touch the heart. The Narnia series of films always seem too childish, as if they did not realize that being careful with childhood is not the same as treating children with childishness.

It's OK-ish, losing it's way in the last act where it just wants to do action sequences. Will Poulter's Eustace may be a bit too knowing and snarky for some but I enjoyed his asides. The rest of the cast holds up well too.
