The Cider House Rules could be described as an incredibly pleasant feel good movie and that is despite dealing with a range of very intense issues from abortion to incest. The many difficulties that the characters are experiencing are however crafted into a journey of self-discovery with a high degree of finesse. Very enjoyable if perhaps a little forgettable.

Standard pre-Woke Oscar bait, which means it's got quality acting & direction, it's based on a novel & views blacks as actual imperfect humans rather than as tokens meant to fulfill some DEI mandate. It also forwards a liberal agenda, which is one reason one political part of Maguire's coming-of-age tale can be seen coming the minute it's raised. It also perpetuates the idea that rules shouldn't be followed. Still, it is well made & moving, as any well-done story about orphans can't help be.

Hard to believe that Irving wrote the screenplay. It's so weak. It's due to time constraints, this change of the original plot. I know. A sad thing although, 'cause this resembles a soap opera.

A feel-good "Set-in-the-40's" feeling, The Cider House Rules is an outstanding novel-based film with loyal performances from the cast.

A lovely score, beautiful cinematography, and a myriad of great performances are flattened by a mediocre screenplay. The screenplay vacillates between Earnest sentimentality, laughable schmaltz, and it even manages to slip in an unneeded taboo plot twist (on top of the abortion subject matter). I don't know if it was the way Delroy Lindo's character was written but he came off hokey and contrived. ultimately Its a pleasant enough movie even if a little slow. Ain't that right Homer?

Classic second era 90's movie. I enjoyed it, sure, but it's one of those movies that's too nice and could barely take any inspiration from. Nothing wrong with that, sometimes a thing like that comes in your life and you should just accept it, enjoy it. Cast is wonderful. Everything feels too polished, too perfect.

Not the biggest fan of this movie. Moved far too slow for my tastes, and just seemed to be about nothing.

While the book is far superior this is a decent job of adapting it. The cast performs ably, particularly Caine and Lindo. Not a masterpeice but a good silid drama that usually avoids overly sentimental pitfalls.

Another unimpressive title that reinforces the wisdom of the old cliché "Don't judge the book by its cover". Its warm and natural take on the ups & downs in life makes this movie palatable to me. Many separate events were shown occurring simultaneously, yet the story remained intact and coherent till the end. A masterful way of capturing the vagaries of living...and dying beautifully. My SCORING: 99-96=Great; 95-90=Very good; 89-85=Good; 84-80=So-so; 79-70=Boring; 69-1=Forget it

The film's talented cast, realistic characters, and willingness to explore darker themes give it some more emotional depth, even it seems burdened by the sheer weight it decides to carry.

The Cider House Rules was in many ways a life changing film. I went in to watching it thinking it was going to be really good, but what I did not realize is that this film is not just a movie following several stories, but in the end is telling one very big, meaningful one. The Cider House Rules has perfect performances on the part of Charlize Theron, Tobey Maguire, and Michael Caine. And it has an absolutely beautiful musical score, so overall this is a movie that is not to be missed by anyone.

Difficult to find much to complain about in this inoffensive, classical telling. This feels like something a tenth grade English teacher would make a classroom watch and then ask needling questions about the significance of the cider house rules. But there's little wiggle room for interpretation: this is a well-told pro-choice film that should probably be revisited by a larger audience today.

Pleasant way to pass a couple of hours with 'emotional strings' being pulled in various places. CHR is beautifully filmed with lovely music. There are also some great performances; Caine and supporting cast were excellent and the kids were great. However, McGuire is hopeless. His facial expression runs from A to B (dead pan to faint smile) and no further. The idea of Theron falling for this "likeable" statue is unbelievable. Despite that, CHR has a decent message about rules and is worth seeing

I like this movie even though it's slow pacing & shiny perfect characters & happy orphanage schtick make me edgy. I'm a bit confused as to the message particularly regarding the title. "Homer" here isn't quite so good as he is in other pictures.

Methodically slow but powerful story about an orphan who is raised and trained by the resident doctor. He steps into the outside world and it helps him to find his purpose in life. Charlize Theron is gorgeous. Tobey Maguire was good for this role as a gentle, soft spoken young doctor. Several moral issues are handled. I would liked to have seen a little more of the love story. The ending was somewhat predictable but satisfying. Overall, well worth watching.

It's fine overall. Nothing I will ever want to see again. The orphanage is the most interesting part of the story, only for it to fall to the wayside in the second act. But the stilted dialogue is the biggest offender here. And Maguire's awkwardness makes a few scenes unintentionally funny. The movie is trying so hard to be important, and it falls short.
