The Citadel

Rather awkward pacing and acting at times that makes it feel more like an early 30s film than late 30s, and it's bit preachy in ways that don't really resonate today. Despite all that, it's a compelling story with a solid structure, and that keeps it interesting even while the execution is lacking.

A quality British medical drama with Robert Donat as the passionate fresh doctor rising in his chosen profession. The first half of the film is by far the best. That's when he works out in the districts under poor working conditions, encountering social problems and challenges about getting his theories accepted by old fashioned mentalities. Then he turns city doctor and it becomes wooden and it loses it's emotional edge even if they try and salvage that at the end. Robert Donat is a ace actor!
