A group of priests of various ages lives together with Mónica, a nun, in a house on the Chilean coast. When they are not praying and atoning for their sins, they train their greyhound for the next race. What on earth has brought them here, practically to the end of the world, where a stiff breeze constantly blows? When a new priest moves in, a man suddenly turns up at the door and starts making strong accusations about the newcomer... (berlinale.de)

Films which directly deal with religion have the peril of seeming too open and snobbish on their subject matter, and although Larrain achieves to be symphatetic to all sides and underlines that the love for a dog and homosexual sex may be more genuine than the oppressive love for a God, his movie is nevertheless an example of the former kind I described. Btw "club" means an exclusive community but also a thick stick with which one defends himself or attacks someone, just like the Christianity.

I thought this was an engaging and well-acted film, but I left the theater with nothing but confusion. After hours pondering it, I'm still left with no concrete opinions, but such is the nature of religion and sin? I guess.

El Club [The Club] (2015) is like Spotlight (2015) without the gloves on! Goes straight after the pedophile priests with very detailed accounts as to what they did to the little boys in the church! Not a pretty picture, but one that makes a strong impression for sure!

Presents its issue with heartfelt concern. Doesn't offer easy answers and allows you to make your own opinions about the very complex social mess it's depicting. Most poignantly of all it shows how no one (including the Church) really wants to deal with this problem. Effective and haunting but not brilliant and a bit excessively ponderous considering its important and harrowing subject matter.

If there's any dilemma here it's escaped me.

Couldn't get into this. Don't think I ever really expected myself to. Some nice shots. All pretty dark. Slow pace. Grim characters. Priests talking openly about their sexual fantasies or experiences. Kind of messed up, but not in that entertaining way I like.

Very very dark. A film that opens up a lot but provides no clear answers, but along the way a lot of subtlety and grim social and moral complexity.

Unlike Spotlight, doesn't shy away from putting the victim and his experiences at the centre of the story.

Dark movie about depraved priests. Great shots and acting. Depressing and shocking. Brutal depiction of depravity in Catholic Church. Lack of hope is really creeping throughout this spectacle.
