The Colossus of Rhodes

Sword and sandals epic is a lot of fun, and though it stays within the lines of a traditional potboiler, it's livened by some signature Leone touches, including some surprising (for 1961) brutality and a ghoulish sense of humour (the bell-ringing torture scene is worth the price of admission). Calhoun makes for a stoic if not especially interesting hero and the supporting cast are given little to do, with their by-play usually overwhelmed by the impressive (and exciting) battle/fight scenes.

Pretty good sword and sorcery flick that looks great, even if the pacing isn't anything to write home about. Still, good chemistry between the characters, and some rather intense and inventive battles. It also finally proves the old adage: Phoenicians are dicks.

Nothing is particularly awful, there are some good action sequences, and the Colossus itself is an interesting atomic bomb analogy. I didn't hate it. But I didn't really enjoy it much either. The plot moves in fits and starts and doesn't really get cooking until the third act. The performances are pretty wooden. Some of the fights drag on and on. And the whole thing just feels done by rote. I think a skilled editor could make a pretty good picture out of this, but it would still lack passion.
