I don't get the love for John Wayne. He sucks.

Despite having enough plot strands and tangents of interest, this never successfully works any of them by themselves or together. It's worth viewing for Lee Marvin's short yet scene stealing performance, but it feels disappointing considering how good it looks cinematically and its attempt to create a multiple chaptered and stranded John Wayne western.

Enjoyed the music and the expansive scenery even if it's not Texas.

A lesser Wayne, but a damned good time. And what a score by Elmer Bernstein! The irony in using John Wayne's character as a Hello Dolly! matchmaker is hilarious.

Provides everything one could want in a sprawling widescreen western, without excelling in any department. The ending is rather abrupt.

Very old-fashioned (and dated) western with a rather lame "aren't we having fun" kind of tone. At least Lee Marvin's crazy character is actually a lot of fun.
