The Confession

After criticizing the brutality of fascism in 1969's Z, Costa-Gavras follows it up with this, an attack on the totalitarianism of the communist end of the political spectrum. The Confession is a directory of inhumane methods used to coerce a confession from an innocent man. It's effectively disturbing, but it's not nearly as brilliant as Z.

Num período particularmente conhecido pelas atrocidades cometidas no país, mostra um estado totalitário a pleno vapor, sem nunca esboçar nada anti-comunista, uma visão oriunda do próprio protagonista que nunca deixou de acreditar na visão de mundo socialista, foi chamado de Trotskista lá atrás e seria assim chamado ainda hoje por não acreditar num sistema corrompido pelo medo e pela força. A fiercely political film, strengthened by its repetition in relation to the torture, which involves a lot of shouting and coercion from the kidnappers and a lot of stoicism from the kidnapped (all of which is brilliantly and powerfully acted). Into the second half, things get more procedural as the story expands and includes a greater scope of the nation's turmoil, a part of history I'm pretty oblivious to, but was glad to experience through this magnificent and effective film.

Suffering under the most intense and evil powers of Totalitarian Communism a heroic idealist maintains his faith in Socialism.
