What a dud. Where the first one at least managed to create mood and build up its scares, this always felt artificial and predictable. Booga wooga, have some jumpscares from a grumpy old man claiming squatter's rights and a convoluted-continent-hopping corpsepaint nun. Plus there was no need for this to be 134 goddamn minutes. I did get a chuckle out of the Warrens' concern for being seen as frauds though.

If a demon really wants your soul, and has already displayed the ability to invade your quaint American home and fuck with the wooden letters you have on your bookshelf...not to mention ENTER YOUR WIFE'S MIND, then why the hell does it contrive this master plan to get you to take a road trip to jolly England? I know, I know. If we knew what demons were thinking we wouldn't have these problems. Shame on me.

Some good scares, but nowhere near as good as the original. Plus the veneer between true fiction and the fictional true story wears a little thin. Okay, the devout Catholic exorcists investigate a haunting, find video evidence it's being faked, and then go back with no cameras to find out it's actually real and cast out the demon in the name of God. Right.

Pedestrian horror in its purest form. Paints a guy who calls the Warrens out on their shit as a bad guy even though he's completely right. The girl gets possessed by a ghost who says he's 72 years old, then two lines later the ghost calls the 40 year old mother an "old cow". This movie is far too long also, nobody ever said, let's cut the Elvis scene?

Throws out any subtlety the first might have had to go balls out in what is possibly a more entertaining, but much worse movie. All the tie-ins with the nun openly detracted from the movie though.

The Conjuring 2 build off its successful first entry with an excellent screenplay, cinematography, and maybe slightly better scares. Wan pulled off a massive task of making a good horror sequel. That's not to say it doesn't have its issues as well, mainly it's pacing and runtime (135 min) being a little too inconsistent and longer than need be. However, it does seem to play more into typical tropes, and I thought that was a hit or miss, much like the first one. Still, impressive.

Even though Wolfe is terrific in Linda Blair mode, this is not as great as the original. The plotting is less than cohesive. But, as it delivers some nice scares - courtesey of Wan and his equally skilled cinematographer, Burgess, this sequel is still a good deal more effective than most horror flicks out there. For whatever that's worth.

the most remarkable thing about "the conjuring 2" is that there's absolutely nothing remarkable about it. it's just a bunch of tropes you have seen about a 107 times before, supported by the incredibly sappy dialog generator (brought to you by our lord and savior jesus christ^tm). no doubt, it's apt filmmaking...used in the most redundant and uninventive way yet again. hallelujah!

I appreciated it more on second viewing. Wan managed to craft a sequel that squarely plays off of the first one in the best ways possible. It's still tense, chilling, and emotionally resonating and investing, particularly for Ed and Lorraine, the best characters in this series. The pacing is really good and the scares and tension are pretty consistent. I wasn't (quite) as frightened this time around but I still jumped a couple of times and felt all of the tension. I for one liked the cgi.

Same tricks as the first movie with too much reliance on CG and too much showing the monster. Same problems I had with Insidious and most of this company's movies. They show way too much and the monster becomes less threatening every time they do. Conjuring 1 was great because the monster/ghost was used more sparingly with lots of attacks coming from the dark/invisibly. Here a tall CG man runs around a house for awhile.

I didn't care too much for this one. There were some early scenes that had some good suspense, but the actual scares were pretty lacking. And by the midway point, I was just rolling my eyes at the 'scary' scenes. The story wasn't especially compelling, even if it is based upon 'true events', and it wasn't different enough from the first movie. The dialogue and some of the performances really let things down. I was looking forward to this, but I ended up feeling rather disappointed.

Good horror movies are rare and good horror movies sequels are rarer. The Conjuring 2 happens to be both of these things, which statistically speaking should be considered downright miraculous. Thanks to director James Wan, who knows how to do this better than almost anyone currently working, we've got an atmospheric and chilling horror movie with just enough of a twist to differentiate it from its predecessor.

The Conjuring 2 loses a lot because it is so derivative compared with the first movie. The story and acting were once again pretty good. The only thing that really changed this time was a little bit of skepticism on the part of the Warrens. I thought the change of venue was an interesting addition to this movie. I don't know much about the Warrens but it's interesting that they took cases in other places besides just the US. I will watch the side story in the series but I am starting to tire.

An homage to, and borderline wannabe, Amityville Horror, to which I awarded 10 points for the music alone. This has none of that music (actually, a few bars clearly allude to the Amityville theme...a fitting sign of modern horror's unoriginality), and is too insecure to avoid "anthropomorphizing the demonic force", which is not only superfluous alongside possession, but, seriously, always ends up looking stupid.

As a comparison, this is definitely by-the-numbers and even downright silly at times. However, they did develop likable enough characters and the nun made me absolutely crawl out of my skin. The drama and horror blended together very well. Sometimes, a formula works. It's not a perfect movie, but a very good sequel for reasonable expectations.

Utter dross. Why was this even made? The structure is all wonky, basically a poor balance concerning begin, middle and end. Pacing therefore is off, let alone the fact it is incredibly overlong, with silly attempts at comic relief. Every horror cliche is used, predictable scares galore and indeed we've seen it all before...I loved the first TC, liked Annabelle to a certain extent but found TC2 just impossible to enjoy in any way. For a possible third part, please stay in the US. Thanks.

Nothing here makes any sense. Yes, it's a film about ghostbusters, but it must have been possible to write a better script somehow. The Warrens come across as total idiots but that's ok, because it is funny to watch them explain their crap to others. The Conjuring 2 never challenged my disbelief towards everything paranormal, but the Marilyn Manson demon, as labeled by Judge Holden, was pretty scary and most of the jump scares worked pretty well.

Another case for the Warrens which could have been as gripping as the first one from the first film, but is diminished by the immersion breaking caused either by the characters refusing to seek help after being put in a horrific situations, or because the main antagonist is way too generic and soulless that you end up feeling pity for the actress that plays it. That said, the amazing camera work and atmosphere is still there and is enjoyable if you are able to suspend your disbelief.

Really solid stuff. I have a weird amount of respect for James Wan's obsession with period atmosphere (particularly with vintage media/audiovisual equipment). I feel like these might be faith-based movies in disguise? It has pretty much all of the tropes of the genre, up to and including skeptics trying to disprove the heroes and stop them from saving souls. Also, everything that's not a scare or lead up to a scare has this creepy Pat Boone/sandwiches with the edges cut off vibe to them.

I hope they put an end to this series. Insidious, Conjuring and numerous other horror movies with the word "exorcism" in their name come across more or less the same. They all manage to scare you equally through a combination of silent scenes followed by loud interruptions from the ghosts.

Some effective visuals - the demon is pretty scary, if a bit overexposed (we probably shouldn't have seen it in the first ten minutes of the film). But like most sequels, the plot isn't as tight as the original. Its focus on the relationship between the two leads isn't very interesting. Not a bad movie, but nowhere near as good as the first one.

I appreciate the time James Wan gives his characters. Instead of offing people we don't care about, all the bad stuff happens to fully formed characters. Unfortunately, the repetitive bumps in the night, creaky doors, and creeping around the house wear out their welcome well before the 135min running time.

James Wan is a genius visualist. I was reminded of the old school ideology (John Huston I think?) of having three great scenes and no bad ones. This movie has like six great scenes and three awful ones. It's weird. I can't help but try and figure out why some of the emotions are needlessly cheap while the in-scene pacing, sound, and visual reveals are top notch horror of this era. Structurally this movie is extremely weird too - which doesn't make it bad, but makes it feel long.

Although this one took longer to hook me than the 2 that preceded it & the scares aren't as surprising, this series is really working for me. This time around I got hooked by the quieter character moments w/ the Warrens - between themselves & w/ the Enfield kids. While there's nothing deep about it, it's unusual in horror - especially this level of goodness. The ending also tied story threads together in an unexpected and satisfying way. One of the best horror franchises so far.

Very good horror film. Manages to play well as a stand-alone-film, with only some references to the original, so you can definitely enjoy this without having any prior knowledge. There are a few decent scares and the mystery and blurred lines of the plot is really well done. Kudos to James Wan, who surely can be considered a great horror film director by now.

Terrific and atmospheric haunted house movie is hobbled by overlength and some too generous cribbing from THE EXORCIST but Wan deserves full credit for largely avoiding jump scares in favour of maintaining a simmering sense of unease, before going balls-out at the climax; he's helped by Wilson and Farmiga's grounded and authoritative performances, bringing credibility to fairly silly material, and also Wolfe as the possessed girl. Change of locale to 70s London is a brilliant choice.

The change of setting is interesting, quite different from the usual lone house in the american countryside. You wonder what the neighbors are doing though, and how can anyone in the house sleep when the others are screaming all the time. The attempt at making it bigger and flashier in the third act left me less impressed, but overall it's not the biggest downgrade from the first movie

Wan reprises his 2013 horror flick with remarkable success. This isn't about novelties: the story's simple, occasionally predictable and far from original, yet he has undeniably put a lot of care in the orchestration of a relatively long horror film that doesn't really show its duration. The Christian preaching and occasional melodrama mar the overall impression, but the film still strikes as a notable example of modern horror cinema following and expanding upon the tradition of its predecessor.

Wan is one of the greatest thieves in contemporary Hollywood. He is especially adept at repackaging his influences into a shiny new package that's entertaining and aesthetically pleasing. The Conjuring 2 offers more of the same, but it isn't as good as the somewhat overrated original. The period atmosphere is recreated effectively, and the long mobile camera takes are impressive, but it's ultimately too slick to truly scare, and the dramatics are overwrought and very stereotypically Hollywood.

While the first film had a pretty creepy story, this time the plot has no real substance and is really just a framework on which to hang jump scares. The jump scares themselves are pretty strong at the beginning, but their quality diminishes as the movie progresses. There are also numerous attempts to make you connect emotionally to the characters, but they fall flat and are the weakest part of this movie.

Nothing's new here to its 2013 prequel. Even the ending was a poor copycat of the 2013's. Worse, the setting was unbelievable: ghosts in a busy apartment? C'mon, give me a break! Worst, it tried to salvage "The Nun"-- the all-time terrible film not worth your dime-- by injecting the stupid-looking nun herself in the movie, which only muddled the sterling record of the Conjuring franchise. MY SCORING: 99-96=Great; 95-90=Very good; 89-85=Good; 84-80=So-so; 79-70=Boring; 69-1=Forget it

I can't rate this film higher is because it's about the Warrens, who were a couple of charlatans that took advantage of vulnerable and desperate people. While this is touched on briefly, it's done more in the context of people who don't believe them are all mean and unsympathetic. Otherwise, its's a competently made horror film that's better than its predecessor, if a little predictable, but don't look at it as being based on a true story. Take it with a massive grain of salt.

Again, the “true story” basis means that nothing much really happens (it’s funny to think of Lorraine Warren and the Hodgson sisters sitting around watching this, saying, “yep, that’s exactly how it went down”), but the filmmakers do employ a lot of filming and editing tricks to try to keep viewers interested, and the musical interlude is pleasant enough (presumably the Warrens were Elvis fans).

But for Christians who already know God is out there, do they really need to face these cinematic demons? The Conjuring 2, like its hide-behind-the-seat forebear, is a truly frightening movie. Director James Wan--who directed the original Saw and both Insidious movies--knows how to scare an audience, how to agitate moviegoers. He's proved with both Conjuring movies that he doesn't need a lot of gore to tell a truly terrifying yarn. But don't think that the lack of gore makes everything OK.

Suffers issues typical of current horror with jump scares, predictable beats, and too little actual creepiness. The charm of being set in 70's Britain and the horror visuals makes it worth watching. There's also a hilarious karaoke scene with Ed Warren (Wilson) inexplicably breaking out with guitar and song halfway through the movie.. set over a scene montage. Seriously. Improves on almost everything from the original: the story is tighter, the family is more developed and, thus, more relatable, the urban setting is more attractive and better designed, and the Nun offers better scares than most. Like most of Wan's output, it relies on an existing language, this time provided by The Exorcist and The Omen, but as a modern pastiche of classic horror melodrama, the film is almost unparalleled. Finally, there's a cinematic universe I can get behind.

Unintentionally hilarious here and there, but mostly just a convoluted mess of nonsense.

Solid overall. It offers decent scares, pretty good acting and above all the directing by James Wan really elevates it from a mediocre to a pretty decent horror film.Other than that though it doesn't really offer anything that special,it does have a lot of familiar elements to it and it isn't really that emotionally engaging because the characters(other than the Warrens)are pretty forgettable and uninteresting.

I think the first one was definitely scarier and played more strongly into its time period. That being said, the scares are still effective and the acting is great from everyone. It's nice having a solid new horror franchise out again with good writing, I hope the movies to come are just as compelling.

Its scary, but after a while, it reaches it climax without being able to top it off when it really should
