This is the scary ass, haunted, cursed voodoo movie that you thought you were going to see when you heard news stories and advertisements for "The Blair Witch Project" and "Paranormal Activity", only this one is a bona fide, knock your socks off, scare fest. I was so friggin' scared that I was swearing out loud in the movie theater, something I've never done before.

Here are the facts: I've seen my share of horror movies. I've visited some haunted places. And I went cold in the theater twice. Not got chills; went cold. The only other movies that have done that to me feature closeups of Cameron Diaz's face.

Yeah, sure, I'll admit. There's nothing new here. Haunted houses, witches, possessions, I've seen it all before... But then again, I've seen porn before, and I just. keep. coming. back. for. more. Were we talking about a movie?

Watching "The Conjuring" is almost depressing; on its own merits it is slightly above average, but the fact that 99% of horror that has come out in the past few years is truly bad makes it look like a masterpiece in comparison. It plays out exactly like you would expect a haunted house / exorcism mashup would. But while it does nothing new, it hits almost every beat very well, flawlessly combining atmosphere and jump scares. Just a solid horror throughout.

Really efficient, pulling off many neat scares with technical savvy while adhering strictly to the ground rule probably most fundamental to elevating the genre: that less is always more. Not many horror films of this quality come about in a decade.

Fairly dumb and dull, but not as, eh, horrible, as what else is out there at the moment. This mostly because it refrains from jump scares and found footage. But in terms of haunted house movies, this has got jack on 'Poltergeist', and in terms of exorcisms, it's nothing compared to me and Mr. toilet on any given Sunday at noon.

It doesn't bring anything new to the table, but The Conjuring keeps the creepyness factor throughout its running time, which seems a rare feat nowadays. Also it made the girl I saw it with squeeze my hand so often I think it's shattered beyond saving. Worth it though. The movie is a bit cluttered and has a few unintentionally amusing/groaner moments, but all in all this is pretty damn decent old school horror stuff.

I thought this might be a cut above the regular horror fare. I was wrong. The story comes about as close to reality as a fireside ghost story, and the pandering religious aspect was sickening.

Technically impressive and stylistically competent, but for all that had little impact on this viewer. Just too many elements that cannot be taken with the seriousness the film seems to expect of its audience. Strangely, really nothing much happens to any of the characters, despite much screaming and shouting: perhaps a legacy of its "true story" provenance. Criticisms of the film on the grounds it presumes the Salem witches to indeed have been actual, evil witches, seem legitimate.

The vast majority of possession movies are bad. This one was not. I wouldn't say it's great by any means but the quality actors elevate the material and the director shows a confident hand while avoiding anything too cheesy. I'd recommend it to horror fans but it's not really a must see to others.

Full disclosure: I will testify right now under oath (or most importantly, with my hand on the Word) that I have seen demons speak, and of Powers and Principalities made manifest. At multiple times in my viewing I had to remind myself, demons are only given as much volition as one allows. Demons don't speak to us, they only speak to themselves. Which is a long-winded way to say: kudos, The Conjuring. Ku-fucking-dos.

Someone with definitive proof of afterlife should probably care more about the protections of the church. He tells the family to get baptized with the urgency of mentioning offhand they are out of milk. Kids also wouldn't go in the room that they were attacked by a ghost it's kinda odd they keep going back.

So, uh...Wan's a hack, guys. His beats are all off, so that all those "jolt" moments that come with horror flicks either happen too soon or too late here to be effective. And then, when the demonic action does start up, it sails so far off the rails as to become laughable. These people don't just get haunted; they get chucked and swirled and spun all over their house like they're in a pinball machine, then Wan will suddenly cut away to outside, or a different house, or something. Overkill.

The acting is quite good, the effects are believable (within the framework of the movie) and it's very well paced in the way it slowly but consistently build up the tension, urgency and scares. Rather than focus solely on this specific story, it tries to up the stakes by painting it as part of a larger series of phenomena, and that helps increase the impact when the scares actually come. It does lack the depth or thematic complexity to be a great film, but it's very effective at what it does.

Surprisingly creepy, tense and scary. I did not care for Insidious as it seemed to fall apart around the halfway mark and that now seems like a trialrun up to this movie. Where that movie switched from scary to laughable this movie kept the tense moments coming. This movie somehow convinced me to come back for Insidious 2 and that James Wan might actually be okay so there's that. This is highly recommended, watch it in the dark, with the sound up. Clap clap.

The Conjuring manages to hold an unsettling atmosphere, keeping you on the edge of your seat for the entire length. Obviously heavily influenced by classic haunting flicks like The Exorcist, it gets a bit hammy in parts. That shouldn't divert you from seeing this, though. It's scary as shit, and the best horror you'll see this year.

I thought it was a pretty great film. James Wan has always been a great horror director and this has some of the best scares and imagery of all his filmography. There's some great tension and make-up/effects in here, with a familiar but good story as well. All of the acting is pretty solid and there are legitimate reasons to like both the family going through this AND the ghost hunters. It's also pretty to look at. You've likely seen this kind of movie done before, but maybe not this well.

One of the all-round strong hitters of recent mainstream horror. It's nothing too original, it doesn't reinvent the form, but it does a good old-fashioned home invasion story with a form and style that eclipses the vast majority of Hollywood's last decade of output. It delivers the scares with gusto, it never cheats with the jumps (one of my horror pet-hates), and it's all tied together with an uncharacteristically strong narrative. It's deserving of its word-of-mouth-hit status.

One point pretty early on has just a horrendous music drop that cuts the tension. It took all the self control I had not to ruin the film right then and there with my laughter. From then on the movie just got better minus a couple silly visuals and moments. But the cherry on top making this an instant classic was finding out this is the house Casey Anthony lived in. *ba dum tss* double ghosts bitch

Solid and legitimately scary. It mixes atmosphere with jump scares effectively. It doesn't offer much in terms of innovation but that's not a problem. Guys, I hate horror movies. I will literally turn a movie off if there's a shitty jump-scare. The Conjuring has like...total... 1 jump scare, and it's totally legit. It's amazing. Horror is far from my favorite genre. I did however enjoy this very much. It delivers all the scares with a nice tense build up. The period setting and the acting is perfect. The first 1/3 of this film plays like a master's course in creating suspense; scenes r staged with the kind of calm self-assurance that's a throwback to films like Poltergeist. Not only does it avoid making concessions 2 the modern pseudo-doc style, it chooses its performers for their acting ability & they're asked to play adults rather than moronic teens. A horror film can't rely on suspense forever however & despite its thrills the 2nd half seems slightly less impressive than what preceded it

Though it has its fair share of jump scares, The Conjuring is mainly about suspense. Something that is lacking in most horror films these days. Even when Wan is playing with old horror tropes, he manages to make them feel fresh most of the time. However, the downfall of the film that really holds it back from greatness is the last 20 minutes or so when the film forgoes suspense in favor of what is essentially an exorcism action sequence. A shame such a refreshing film couldn't end better.

Instant horror classic. Wan gave it his all and it's easy to see. From the cinematography to the styling, everything works. Where other films fail within this sub-genre, this one nails it and nails it hard. Very refreshing to see a director, who's not just a hired gun, put all his effort into establishing something genuinely good. Basically Wan's best work so far and hopefully the sequel will be just as good, but something tells me this won't be the case. A horror must watch.

As someone who loves horror, I'm not head over heels for this franchise. However, this is actually a decent horror film. The Conjuring blends a good mix of genuine scares, typical tropes, and solid cinematography to leave me happy. I'd even go as far to say it's decently disturbing. However, it still draws itself out, and does so on the heels of build up that didn't leave me entirely satisfied for the amount of time this film uses as build up. The payoff could've been a little more

This film is a perfect example of how much of a difference a good cast can make. Clearly the film borrows heavily from other horror movies and story-wise, it's nothing you haven't seen before. Still, the film is well put together, the camerawork is noteworthy and the right atmosphere is definitely there. Also, the jump scares are pretty effective. The core story has been done to death, but by focusing on the "little" things - characterization, setup & payoff, moment-to-moment execution, acting, stakes - that so many of its contemporaries choose to ignore, The Conjuring holds itself significantly higher than the typical haunted-house/exorcism film. (FWIW, this is coming from someone who did not care for Wan's "Insidious").

This was too much fun (minus the death of Sadie, why must they always kill cute animals??????). Haunted house horror is still my favorite genre of horror film, and The Conjuring evokes the feeling of many 70s horror films (i.e. dramatic zoom-ins) with some very modern twists. The film most certainly relies on jump-scares as its primary vehicle for horror, but the atmosphere and acting from the cast are superb and incredibly creepy. It's the best haunted house film I've seen in a long time.

So when 71% of the script is just people yelling "CAROLINE!" "ED!" "BRAD!" "JUDY!" "AUGUST!" "LOTTA!" "ROWAN!" "ROWAN!" "ROWAN!" etc, do they still have to pay the scriptwriters? That said, and the silly "Based On A True Story" nonsense hat tries to turn this into a commercial for a couple of real-life humbugs, this is a standard but quite well-done and well-acted possession story that for the most part doesn't overdo it.

But however one sees this movie spiritually, most moviegoers will be scared by what they see. Images of Bathsheeba clutching a knife or vomiting blood haunt long after the credits roll. The sounds of terrified girls screaming echo beyond the theater parking lot. This is dark stuff that leaves a darkness in the mind. And as we see in the movie's message itself, darkness tends to cling. (pluggedin.com)

The Conjuring leaves a lot to be desired coming from the director of Insidious 1 & 2. The Conjuring isn't particularly bad, but doesn't do much to distinguish itself from any other haunted house movie. The scares are bog standard and the movie lacks the sheer confidence of Insidious. One thing I can always appreciate is Wan's sets and choice of houses. The beautiful house here is something this good-at-best movie shares with the far superior Insidious.

From the onset there is not a single original thing about the Conjuring. It's basically every haunted house/demonic spirit/exorcist movie you've ever seen except it's done fairly well by director James Wan. The film splits its focus between the Warrens who are the paranormal investigators and the family being haunted. Despite being based on a "true" story there's plenty to doubt about it. The acting is surprisingly decent for a horror flick as well. Vera Farmiga really shines.

Wan is showing a real amount of growth as a director. He's learning that a scene without a jump scare is a good way to build tension. And this movie definitely builds it. When the scares arrive, they're (mostly) quite effective. Still though, the nice atmosphere is hampered by a reliance on tired conventions. In a movie with fresher ideas, the nail-biting horror of this film would have made for a near masterpiece. As it stands it's just an effective by-the-numbers haunted house flick.

It's clear from the slightly overripe tone that James Wan sought to make an old-school horror thriller in a 70s/80s vein (the bright yellow title card subtly but decidedly evokes this); he succeeds, creating not only an effective homage, but an enjoyable and unsettling film in its own right. A married pair of ghost hunters (Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga) attempt to uncover the mystery of a haunted house, with matters coming to a head in a relentless, draining final act. Superbly made all around.

It uses pretty much every cliché in the book (inducing several cringes), but let's give credit where credit is due: this is a generic horror film done damn right. Wan has grown as a helmer since the "Saw" days and here he manages to provoke a near-suffocating feel of dread and unease (exactly the point of these films) along with some effective jump scares. Well-made, utterly conventional, only moderately effective, taking place in essentially the same parallel universe as the INSIDIOUS movies, where experts are always turning up, you know, knowing things, and such, one of the worst modern horror cliches, since it always makes things seem even more ridiculous. Too many characters and no real focus: are the primary protagonists the family being haunted or the demonologists trying to help them? Also, too many spirits haunting them. There's not enough focus in the whole plot to really create suspense. Most of the scares come from the jump scares and the Annabelle doll, and since I found out after watching that she has her own movie, it's probably better to just watch that movie instead.

I admit it. I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. It's just this flick starts off with so many banal cliches that my eyes got too tired from all the rolling they did.

I love horror movies when they present reason for the occurance of evil. In reality, the issue of evil is too important to be dealt with as a simple "anomaly" and agnostic issue. Of course it can reveal itself supernaturally and esoterically but narrator should have some degree of empathy towards it. Here, it is a boring family story where we have a familly of angels against devils/witches of whose motivation we know nothing. Good storytelling doesn't suffice to make shit watchable, sorry.

Builds tension well even if it does give away some of its secrets a little too soon. Best horror film I've seen in a while. Relies on terror rather than jumpy scares (though there are a few of those as well). Great performances from the female leads too.

There's absolutely nothing new about the setup, the plot details or the screenplay in general, but this is ultimately a deliciously creepy and well-crafted film. It overcomes its reliance on very familiar tropes by being completely unashamed of using them, and the scares, while rarely unique, are all modulated to perfection. Wan deserves a hell of a lot of credit for making this film as effective as it is.

The Oblivion of horror movies. The Conjuring doesn't hesitate to smash all the cliches into a monstrous blob. Unfortunately James Wan was a bit one-eyed in his research and doesn't really understand this "atmosphere" thing, instead relying on obnoxiously loud noises for scares. In the final 30 minutes, when something was supposed to come of the film, everything falls apart spectacularly and we'll skip into a sappy ending that just forgets half of the movie. Praise God.

This horror movie is the first consistently good one in a very long time. It's not over the top, it didn't give me nightmares for days, but it was logical and thrilling until the end (which might have been a bit too tame). Clapping did scare me for a few days though...

Now this is how you make a horror movie. Might have some trouble sleeping tonight.

I don't understand the high praise for this mostly terrible film. It's derivative, the direction is almost non-existent, the dialogue bored me to tears, and even the special effects are laughable. A bunch of blah.

Do educated people really find this drivel scary? I can't help but laugh because the premise is so absurd. It attempts to legitimize a bunch of Christian pseudoscience paranormal bullshit in a semi-historical account of rednecks being rednecks in rural New England. Also reprehensible that it suggests the poor women of the Salem witch hunt actually were witches. 5 points for slick production value and avoiding the shaky camera or found footage nonsense...

James Wan is the modern master of visual scares. He certainly didn't reinvent the genre, but gave it a nudge in the right direction by launching a hysteria and keeping it going non-stop. The characters have personality and history, so it's easy to be interested in them. Not to mention, it's effectively suspenseful and absolutely terrifying.
