Not sure why this got such a poor critical reception, on Criticker at least; I found it pretty enjoyable. Macy, Baldwin, Bello and Livingston are all great, the plot is sufficiently engaging, the atmosphere is near-perfect. Not tremendously original or in any way a classic, but absolutely worth a watch.

The portrayal of luck is quite engaging and there are some skillful directorial components on a thematic level that up the ante a bit. It feels a bit longer than it is, can be a touch melodramatic, and has a moment of surprisingly poor/distracting makeup. Yes that bit about 'ante' was a pun.

I'll always welcome a rare lead role from William H. Macy.

This film really impressed me. The acting of the 3 principals is tremendous. Toward the end of this movie I kept thinking how much I really came to feel for these characters, despite their obvious and immense flaws. This movie is highly successful. It's like an uplifting version of 'Leaving Las Vegas'

If you ever wondered what Maria Bello's hand would like full of William H. Macy's ballsack, here is your answer. The performances were all fine, etc. etc. but that is literally what comes to mind first. Maybe I have a problem.

I'm a fan of magic realism, and it suits this kind of morality fable. The film didn't really impress me on any level, and I doubt it will stay with me for long, but it was executed very well. I liked the references to Lost Horizon. The sex scenes were entirely gratituous, however, and I could almost hear the director saying "look what I can make these guys do!".

This is an interesting movie, to say the least. I can't really give an objective review here because I enjoyed it enough that I own a copy, but I can't tell you exactly why. I'm sure this film normally gets rate lower than what I just gave it.

Slightly ridiculous, but I bought it anyway. Macy is my hero and Baldwin and Bello seal the deal. The only thing I was really uncomfortable with was the scene where WHM was practically nude. did I just spoil it?

Wonderful movie. Very much worth watching and it was good to see William H Macy in a starring role. Some of his best work. Subtract points: I could have done without seeing *those* parts of Macy though.

BALDWIN COMPLETELY REDEEMS HIMSELF! I really enjoyed this, but it really didn't know how to toe that fine line between drama and comedy, and the believability of the film suffers for it.

Alec Baldwin absolutely should have won the Oscar for this film. He did an amazing job. And, of course, William H. Macy is great. There's also a great sex scene between him & Mario Bello; always a plus.

They took one idea of Larry Niven's in his book _Ringworld_ -- luck as some kind of nearly tangible entity -- and didn't handle it anywhere nearly as well as Niven handled it, or as well as Niven handled every single one of the other ideas in his book. Only recommended if you've always wanted to see William H. Macy in the buff

Nothing that great. I had higher expectations for this flick. I had read that a lot of people thought Baldwin was good in this, but I didn't see it. I actually thought he overdid his role in some parts. My date liked it more then I did, and disagrees on my Alec Baldwin take.

A movie that's about a loser starts out in a hole, and this film almost digs its way out. Almost. Good acting makes this worth seeing, but be prepared for it to fall back on a bit of character cliche in the third act. And make sure you're in the right mood for this before watching--it's a bit of a downer, so either have happy pills nearby or a bright sunny day to go out and enjoy afterwards.

Las Vegas fairy tale, from first-time director Kramer, full of hand-me-down ideas about the old-school gangster who still believes in busting kneecaps to keep order, the failed showgirl and the tail-for-sale, the poor-man's Sinatra and "the next Harry Connick, Jr.," the changing economic landscape: "There comes a time to decide whether you're running a museum or you're running a casino."

An above-average story with good characters, and as an added bonus, Alec Baldwin totally knocks it out of the park in this one. However, aside from that performance, there isn't much else lasting about this picture, which is kind of upsetting.

a pretty standard vegas movie that's elevated by excellent performances from william h. macy and alec baldwin. i loved how each character was so flawed but you couldn't help but enjoy their company anyways. the only downside i found was that i really didn't like maria bello's character.

See Intacto for a better film that uses luck as a tangible quality; see Owning Mahowny as a better story about a loser getting played by vultures. Only see The Cooler if you're dying to know what William H. Macy's balls look like.

Sure, the premise is a bit silly. A man spreads bad luck to all around him as long as he is unhappy? Oh come on! But Macy really makes it work. Actually, the casting was spot on, and there are some interesting shots that distract from the straightforward plot progression. Near the end I was surprisingly invested in Macy's character, and I enjoyed the constant doubt about his fate. Not a great movie, but I can dig a more melancholy version of 'Casino' any day.

This... sure was a movie. I'm not sure what to say about The Cooler. William H. Macy and Alec Baldwin are what make it watchable enough. I guess I wanted to watch one of those Las Vegas gambling flicks, and by many rights this is one - jazzy score and all; but I also got some questionable acting (Bello) and an apathetic theme on luck. Oh, right, luck, this movie is about luck. Well, no, it just shows luck, it doesn't have anything to say on it. Scorsese's Casino was far classier.

The Cooler sports a terrific cast that populates a genuinely told story with a vibrant style of filmmaking. There are some tough turns, and the violence doesn't simply come from the smoking muzzles of Mafiosi but more from the hearts scorched by their ruthless cluster of lights in the middle of the desert.

William H. Macy is the definition of "cool". This film has an interesting mix of comedy, drama and romance. This also might be one of Alec Baldwin's best movies. He does a great job as the heartless (and yet at times scarily loyal) Casino owner. This film has a lot more violence than I was expecting and sexual themes too (don't watch this with your Grandma). It isn't always fun to watch but when it ramps up...

it's worth watching for maria bello's performance which totally dominates the entire film. the story is alright, and as much as i do like william h macy, i mean...eventually you realize he only plays the same guy over and over and over and over and over and so he's good at it and this came out maybe before i saw him repeatedly typecast but it does steal something from his character and performance for me. baldwin is always good at seeming totally unhinged

Great gambling movie. It feels like a fairytale. Sometimes it was super cheesy, but it is a very unique casino film. There are some fun scene transitions in this movie.
