The Core is a disaster even among disaster movies. I can't and won't accept this grave, grave insult of a movie. It is an affront unto science and human achievement. I do not accept the explanation that The Core takes place in some alternate universe where different laws of nature apply, because I do not accept that such a fundamentally retarded universe CAN exist, even in theory. No no no no no no I do not accept it no no no no.

"OK, we're going to give the vessel six components - one for each of you to work in - and continually destroy whichever component is at the end when it becomes necessary to the plot to kill someone off." "Sounds good. Can I work in the front part?" "No." "Dammit."

The only entertaining part of this movie is watching it with friends and making fun of it. The entire plot is terrible, the science is terrible and the acting is nothing special. Apparently these were both intentional and this was supposed to be a very subtle satire on the disaster movie genre. Too bad even as a satire it's just bad.

Back when I worked in the video store, we'd get to pick which movies to play in the store. Occasionally we'd pass the time by trying to out-stupid each other with our selections, most of which came out of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy section. You may be wondering, what relevance does this have to The Core? Well, picking this movie was like bringing a nuclear bomb to a game of rock-paper-scissors. It's the game-breaker. There is no out-stupiding this movie.

After a ridiculous premise, the film manages to make things more silly and unlikeable by following the cliched "death one by one" disaster movie formula and adding in stupid faux-science and lame attempts at hipness through references to hackers.

Everything about this movie is ridiculous, absolutely everything. It's fun to watch but when you actually think about it in any way, or even pay attention to what's happening....argh. All the science in it is so absurd it's unbelievable, as is the way they kill off most of the characters, and the characters themselves, and the plot in general and everything about this film.

"We, the US Government, could never have predicted that the Earth's core would stop spinning! There's no way to fix this!...However, we happen to have all the relevant technology for resolving the problem currently under construction, with adequate funding, and enough time to assemble a team of four highly-competent individuals (and several expendable characters) to complete the mission successfully!"

Good performance from a lot of great actors, but the physics was so bad. Explosions creating rotational acceleration, people sinking in lava, hitting a rock wall perpendicular to motion and skidding across it, and if that wasn't bad enough they defied their own construct of "unobtanium" absorbing all waves and then it echos back ultra sonic waves from the search party.

Wow. Can actors be any less uninspired? The tension in this movie was so non-existant, I thought I was watching a lecture on the importance of oats in a horse's diet. (Yeah, that analogy made about as much sense as the movie did)

Starts off quite well initially, but soon defines the new meaning of ridiculous. It is also one of those films that makes you hate America, here they cause all the problems then try to emerge from the disaster as the heroes. Hilary Swank is just plain annoying as well after doing next to nothing throught the whole film. Pretty dire then overall, although sometimes entertaining for all the inaccuracies.

[Spoiler] I have no idea what just happened to my brain, but it feels utterly violated! My favourite bit is when Greenwood's character dies and Hilary Swank is so devatated she tuts and shrugs her shoulders like she lost her keys or something! To be fair that is just one of the many absolutely hilarious moments in what is the movie equivalent of a chocolate teapot; fucking stupid and absolutely useless.

I know, I know... it's stupid, imposible, without logic, full of cliches caracteristic to this kind of movie plot (they all die, bad scientis/nice scientis duel, "hacker" that is omnipotent in cyberworld, yount apprentice turning to be good...), screaming "we are Americans, and if something terribly happens, we have instant solution that will save the world", but for some reason, I was glued to the screen during whole movie trying to anticipate what will be their next move. The Core is a science fiction film to "the core." For the budget of 60 million, the cast is surprisingly deep and the special effects are amazing compared to movies I've seen almost a decade later with even more money in their budget. Though he's done few other movies, the director Jon Amiel did a spectacular job with this. The movie has its problems, but I accept them with the fact that it's a dang sight better and more serious than any other sci if movie I've seen. (Eg. Deep Impact.)

Fun for a while, especially in its outlandish opening scenes - once we move inside the ship, it shifts to suffocatingly pretentious and ponderous. Harking back to absurd 50s and 60s sci-fi efforts, but spends far too much time pontificating on its goofy "science", giving the audience too much time to consider the implausibilities. Certainly not short of talent in its terrific cast, but doesn't give them much to do; the disaster movie cycle of the 70s was far more considerate to its talent!

I really have a weak spot for stupid disaster movies, but maybe not as stupid as this one. The science makes no sense, the characters are so boring that you never really care for one of them, there's very little disaster happening. It's got some okay moments, especially in the beginning where we get promises of an actual disaster, but the rescue mission that follows is boring, takes far too long, and doesn't really feel suspenseful at all.

I wish I could believe that deactivating the Earth's core would have the effects this movie portrayed, but alas, the suspension of disbelief can only take you so far. Much of the technology in Star Wars is more realistic than the science in this film, and that is depressing.

A lot of the criticism of this focuses on its terrible fake science. It'd be easy to consider this nitpicky - if it weren't for how the movie itself puts *so much* time and emphasis on scientific exposition, only for it to come out inconsistent, unconvincing, and often nonsensical. This in turn is part of how seriously the film takes itself and how much contempt it has for its audience. It's a shame, because we have good actors giving the best performances they can, especially Stanley Tucci.

This one had a rocky start, it but slowly the movie won me over. Sure the premise is ridiculous, but I don't go into a movie for sound scientific reasoning. It's comparable to Deep Impact, it procedural shows the saving of the planet, but where DI is bogged down by melodramatic sideplots this isn't. The last hour just focusses on the team traveling down into earth, which offer one nicely done suspenseful moment after another. The very likable cast also are big factor for the high watchability.

Well at least there are some nice special effects. The acting is rather lousy except for Stanley Tucci who is decent. And the script sounds like it was written by a ten-year-old. This could have been an interesting science fiction film but instead it turned out as basically an even crappier iteration of Armageddon. The world didn't need another 'Americans save humanity' film, but it's got one.

Better than it should be, stupider than it thinks it is. Surprisingly holds up as a disaster movie IMO thanks to good actors, a seriousness usually too hard to muster in these things, and (thinking too hard here) a nice metaphor for climate change. The core starts off pretty good and it really dragged me into the story. But with that said, you have to suspend belief in movies like these. To me, that is not a problem. I also really don't care if the science is accurate as well as long as I am entertained. So, the start of this movie did its job. But the longer the movie went, the sillier this movie got. It got to the point where I wanted to turn away, but couldn't. Even the acting was pretty bad, but it did have some nice fx.
