Dumas would be rolling over in his grave, if he saw this. A reinterpretation that completely misses the point of the novel and makes a romanticist epic into a throwaway B action/adventure movie. If it didn't claim to be based on a classic novel, it would be mildly entertaining.

Excellent swashbuckling entertainment is told with a light and deft touch (unusual for director Reynolds) and played well by its cast; Caviezel suitably rugged and heroic (the 'Passion Of The Cristo' scenes do get an unintended chuckle) and Pearce his match as a smarmy fop. Also gives what amounts to a screen farewell for Harris, who "Michael Caine"s it up as an ageing cell-mate. Spirited adventure only sags a little during the final stages, taking too long to come to a foregone conclusion.

I absolutely loved this movie. Excellent acting and film making. Jim Caviezel was marvelous in the role. A time tested material. Dagmara Dominczyk is beautiful in this. Guy Pearce convincingly plays his envious best friend who becomes a treacherous enemy, but sometimes looks like a baboon. Richard Harris is also excellent as the old prisoner and mentor. Luis Guzman seemed an odd choice but acted well enough.

I really, really liked this movie! It's nothing "briliant" but it has so many great elements--swashbuckling period piece, romance, drama, tragedy, betrayal, revenge, redemption--and I found it hugely entertaining. And Richard Harris gives a grand performance as "The Priest."

Never read the book and even if I did I doubt it would really alter my opinion of the film. I thought the acting was good, just as I'd expect from the cast, but the movie dragged noticably for me. I don't like it when I'm checking my watch waiting for a movie to end.

I remember not liking this movie at all at the time. I would have been 20 years old so that probably had a lot to do with it. On this most recent viewing, I really enjoyed this movie. The acting is great. Guy Pearce is loathsome. Luis Guzman brings some much needed levity to the film. Jim Caviezel is raw and filled with passion and rage. Never having read the book, I am not hamstrung by a need for the movie to be a version of that. I enjoyed it so much that I was rooting towards the end.

Distills the novel into its most basic elements, then constructs a new plot from those foundational pieces. The result feels like an artifact preserved in amber. I mean, SWORDFIGHTS in a MOVIE? Squint, and you can imagine Errol Flynn or Douglas Fairbanks in these roles. The pacing is fantastic and, yes, it comes at the expense of fidelity to the source material. It's a smart tradeoff.

I can't say I expected much from a Dumas adaptation directed by the guy behind "Waterworld" and "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", but maybe that's why I really enjoyed this. The gold standard for adaptations of this book is the 1934 version with Robert Donat, and this compares favourably. It doesn't try to modernize it's tone, largely focusing on characters and simple action sequences, all of which are brought to life by good actors clearly enjoying themselves.

Its general thematic construction pertaining to revenge seems to have been impactful in various other culturally influential pieces, most notably of which Zorro and to a lesser extent Batman, though it could very well be it took not for inspiration its own source material, but rather is a derivation of Zorro in turn being a derivation of Dumas' writing. Either way, on whatever it can be blamed, it misses that orginial spirit in direction one can expect from a good adaptation.

Took too many liberties with the original material for my taste. Jim Caviezel was quite good as the put-upon Edmond Dantes, but Guy Pearce was a bit too 'Ocker playing a Pommie toff' for my taste. As an adventure story that rivals the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean, this movie is definitely in my top five. There is just something about the story that draws me in: he is wrongly imprisoned, grows in strength, and seeks retribution; all the while succeeding and overcoming his past, to end up with the woman that he has always loved. It is romantic and adventurous and full of intrigue and suspense.

Far from perfect as an adaptation, but I enjoyed it. The acting certainly helps things along, as Caviezel and Pearce make formidable sparring partners (literally and figuratively). Best of all is Richard Harris as the old prisoner who teaches Edmond the way of the con (through a proper education, of course). It's one of his final performances and he really nails it. The swordfights are quite exciting, and the movie accomplishes its modest goals. It could be better, but it's still good.

Really great movie and some wonderful lines in the story! It was well acted (Love Harris!) and the production of the movie succeeds in meeting the "epic" feel of the story. The revenge plot is a tad off-putting, though I do think there is a point/moral to it. I just don't know exactly which moral/point it was. I'm not sure if the movie wasn't very good in conveying the said point/moral, or if it wanted it to be left up for interpretation. I suppose I need to read the book.:) Still worth seeing!
