The Country Girl

Grace kelly and Bing Crosby probably give their career best performances. The nuances of a 'cunning drunkard' and the turmoils of a tortured soul are brought to life in a way that takes your breath away. The performances are great overall. Sometimes they are stunning. It turns out to be like a reference book for acting and emoting. Writing is good too. Bad: there were a handful of scenes that looked forced dramatic - e.g after the first kiss when she is left alone in the room.

Despite the presence of Der Bingle in the cast, this is *not* a musical. It's actually a quite strong drama, and all the more poignant if you are witnessing it from the 21st century and therefore know of Crosby's personal shortcomings

Who wants to see Bing Crosby as a failed actor and broken down drunk? Or the amazing and beautiful Grace Kelly as his unglamorous wife, stuck in an desperate unhappy marriage? William Holden is a strong lead actor who falls in love with her. Thankfully they do not keep Grace Kelly dressed like a housewife through the entire movie, she is so elegant in a black dress, hair up and simple string of pearls. Just as this movie was getting interesting, it's over. Sheesh!
