This terrific doc turns many of the conventions of this sort of narrative on their heads, so where we expect to follow someone heroically conquering adversity, we instead see the much more difficult (and even more heroic in my opinion) journey to learning to live with one's limitations. Heartwarming and thought-provoking in equal measure, part of the joy in this is getting to witness Pearce's extraordinary family supporting him through his ordeal.

What an emotional roller coaster man, cried my eyes out.. But what an amazing family, couldn't believe it. I did question at times if it went a bit overboard with the drama, but it does a fine job of showing how Kevin's mind changes through the things he experiences. A good documentary but very emotional.

I don't know if I agree with some of the post-production choices, but "The Crash Reel" is an excellent sports documentary, with an honest curiosity about its subject. This allows for a broad view of sports injuries as life-changing events and how they reflect on big life decisions and the philosophy of life even outside of sports. Kevin Pearce is an extremely lucky guy. He was dealt the best hand imaginable, and some of his stubborness is just spoiled hubris. It is nevertheless endearing.

Interesting that I never heard Kevin Pearce's story before this documentary. Definitely a unique story and one that got you yelling at the screen and being like "seriously??". It may not be the documentary with the best editing or technical prowess, but it sure is one with a lot of raw emotions. More on the reality TV show side of things, but not in a terrible Kardashians way.
