What a bizarrely brilliant film. It started almost as a slightly surreal and very black comedy, and ended up being pretty horrifying; I definitely felt horrified. It is very stylishly made, the editing and transitions really give the film a very peculiar feel, and it is difficult to take your eyes off the decidedly creepy lead character; he was a wrong 'un. I don't imagine that this will be for everyone, but I loved it.

Kopfrkingl is such an effective monster because his transformation is so convincing; he's a preening, eccentric and morally lax outsider whose warped mind needs only a gentle nudge to fully embrace total disregard for human life. The constant, icy narration locks the audience into the machinations of this deranged psyche, accentuated brilliantly by Herz's unorthodox choices of music, editing and camera angles, and Rudolf Hrusínský is a revelation.

Aside from Hrusinsky's disturbingly compelling performance, what really makes this film is the editing - rapid, jarring, and at times unapologetically confusing. Great example of breaking the conventions of continuity editing for an intentionally disortienting effect.

T.C is a gripping oddity that's difficult to pigeonhole: it's a pitch black comedy, a psychological horror, and a chilling allegory for the dangers of ideological possession. Hrusinky gives a creepy performance as the bizarre cremator that's a masterclass in controlled menace, and Herz's use of fish eye lenses and abstracted montage creates a truly disorienting experience that reflects the increasing derangement of Kopfrkingl. It's a deeply unsettling descent into madness that's truly singular.

While the technicality is decades a head of it's time, the offbeat obtuseness bores instead of intrigues. Very creepy and dark, but the allegory to the Holocaust wasn't very gripping, interesting, or of much note. Sorry PSI, this isn't a 💯

The opening moments set the stage here, showcasing the offbeat nature of the film, the way the cinematography and flash images come together to demonstrate a pretty twisted guy. Karl is merely creepy and death obsessed at the beginning, but then when he is introduced to Nazism then he suddenly has an ideology that he can utilize his "talents." The last half is truly demented and scary (not in a modern horror way), but the first is pretty straightforward. Excellent soundtrack too.

I don't being lied to, this is not a comedy. What I did watch of this it reminded me of Bernie, another film which I didn't get but I'm frequently told is brilliant. So this review is simply here to remind me to reevaluate this some time in the distant future.
